Ayo Edebiri's House Was Almost Used in Martin Scorsese's The Departed: 'My Villain Origin Story'

Ayo Edebiri has a personal “villain origin story” — and it’s tied to the 2006 film. Dead.

Edebiri appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers on June 17 and revealed that her house was wanted for use in a crime drama, but her father ultimately turned down the opportunity.

In her interview, the 28-year-old Boston native explained that she was 10 years old when director Martin Scorsese, now 81, filmed Dead in the city of Massachusetts. According to Edebira, a person from the production team asked her dad if they could use their home for the shoot.

“Me and my dad used to take piano lessons,” she recalled in an interview. “They were like ‘Hey, we’re going to make this Martin Scorsese movie; how would you feel about letting us use your house?’ ”

The Inside out 2 the actress said her dad replied, “‘You’re using my house to get paper on my house? You see a working immigrant with a house and you want to steal a house? Nice try.’ ”

Edebiri recounted how a production worker told her father, “It doesn’t work like that.” In the end, it was explained that they would pay for the filming of the scenes in the house with Leonardo DiCaprio.

“He’s like ‘Yeah, pay me the money so you can say in court you paid for my house,'” Edebiri said, confirming that her father then shut down the question altogether.

The production ended up using “another house in our neighborhood,” Edebiri Meyers said. She noted that at the time she was a self-proclaimed fan of Dicaprio, 49, and joked that “[doesn’t] play the piano more” as an act of “revenge” after losing his chance to meet the actor.

Along with Dicaprio, the film — which tells the story of a cop who goes undercover to infiltrate an Irish gang in South Boston as a criminal moves up the ranks — also stars Vera Farmiga, Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, Alec Baldwin and Mark Wahlberg.

Just this year, Wahlberg (53) spoke about some of the problems he faced during filming Dead in an episode of Josh Horowitz Happy Sad Confused podcast. Still, he said on the March 14 episode that “it all worked out in the end.”

Wahlberg’s role in Dead earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. During his podcast appearance, he said that “in the end, I think when I read that particular role, I was like, ‘OK, this is a good role. This is an opportunity for me to really go out and have fun.’ ”
