Babita Kumari Phogat was an Indian freestyle wrestler who later became a politician. She came into the limelight after winning a silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. She is one of the most accomplished female wrestlers in Indian history.

Babita Kumari was born on Monday, November 20, 1989 in Bhiwani, Haryana (age 29; as of 2018). Her zodiac sign is Scorpio. After completing her education, Babita enrolled in MDU, Rohtak for further studies. Her father wanted his daughters to become wrestlers and started training Babita and her sister Geeta from a young age. Babita often visited Akalas in neighboring villages with her father and sister and mostly had to wrestle with boys. Because in India, pursuing a career in wrestling is still considered taboo for women. After country training, Babita enrolled at the National Sports Academy, Patiala.

Babita Kumari Phogat belongs to the Hindu Jat family. Her father Mahavir Singh Phogat is a wrestler. Her mother’s name is Shobha Kaur. She has a brother Dushyant Phogat and three sisters: Geeta Phogat, Sangita Phogat and Ritu Phogat. All of her sisters were wrestlers.
Babita got married to wrestler Vivek Suhag on December 1, 2019, in her ancestral village Ballari in Haryana.

Babita started her wrestling career at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships in 2009 and won the gold medal in the women’s freestyle 51kg category. However, she shot to fame after winning a silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. At the 2012 World Championships, Babita became the second Indian female wrestler to win a medal in the event (the first being her sister Geeta Phogat). Both won bronze medals.
In 2014, she won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
She subsequently qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics; becoming the fourth female wrestler from the country to qualify for the Olympics. However, she was defeated in the first round.
After a disappointing performance at the Rio Olympics, Fugate won a silver medal in the women’s 55kg freestyle wrestling category at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
In 2019, Babita participated in the dance reality show “Nach Baliye 9” with her boyfriend Vivek Suhag.

Previously a supporter of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Babita joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on August 12, 2019, along with her father Mahavir Phogat.
She contested the 2019 Haryana Assembly elections from Dadri constituency but lost.
