Babur Supriyo

Babul Supriyo was an Indian playback singer-turned-politician from Kolkata. He started his political career in 2004 with the Bharatiya Janata Party. He has served as a member of Parliament and a federal minister.

Babul Supriyo was born on 15 December 1970 in Uttarpara, West Bengal (53 years old as of 2023). His zodiac sign is Sagittarius. He was educated at Don Bosco High School and Technical School, Lilua, West Bengal. He graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. In 1991, he received an honorary degree from Serampore College, West Bengal. While in school, he participated in a singing competition and became the All-India Don Bosco Champion in 1983. He won a singing competition and was awarded the title “All India Don Bosco Champion”. The richest talents in 1985.

After college, he worked briefly at Standard Chartered Bank in Calcutta. He quit soon after deciding to become a full-time singer. In 1992, he moved to Mumbai to fulfill his dream. He was deeply influenced by his grandfather, a famous Bengali singer and composer. Supriyo was trained extensively by his grandfather Banikantha NC Baral during his childhood. While in college, he won 45 music competitions and was a regular performer on All India Radio and Doordarshan.

Babul Supriyo belongs to the Bengali ethnic group. His real name was Supriya Baral, but he changed his name to Babul Supriyo in 1992 when he moved to Mumbai. He was born to Sunil Chandra Baral and Sumitra Baral.

Babul Supriyo met his first wife Riaa in Toronto; during a Shah Rukh Khan concert. They married in 1995. They have a daughter, Sharmilee (born 1999). They divorced in 2006.

singing career

Babul Supriyo moved to Mumbai in 1992 to build his career in Bollywood. He first broke up with Kayanji, who chose him to tour the world and perform live shows with Bollywood actors. In May 1993, he performed in Canada and the United States with Amitabh Bachchan. In 1994 and 1995, he performed with all the big Bollywood stars internationally. In 1997 and 1999, he had the opportunity to perform in the United States with Asha Bhonsle. He has had successful performances in many centers around the world including the Netherlands, the United States, the United Kingdom, South America, etc. He used to appear frequently at music festivals. In July 2002, he was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen by the State Department of Atlanta, USA; he became one of the youngest performers to receive this honor.

He made his Bollywood debut as a backup singer in the film Kaho Na Pyaar Hai; this was also the film debut of Hrithik Roshan. After the film was released, Supriyo became an instant hit. Everyone loved his voice and he received several playback invitations to sing. Some of his classic songs are from movies like Hum Tum, Fanaa, Hungama, etc. He has also sung for many Bengali films and was very successful in Bengali films as well. He eventually got a chance to become an actor in Bengali films and starred in many Bengali films. Supriyo is known for his oratory skills and amazing sense of humor. He hosts the show K for Kishore, co-starring Asha Bhonsle and Amit Kumar. Supriyo has sung mainly for Bollywood and Bengali films, but he has also recorded songs in 11 other languages.

political career

Babul Supriyo is an ardent follower of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Narendra Modi. One time during a plane trip, he happened to be sitting with Ramdev. During the flight, Ramdev convinced him to join the BJP and contest the Lok Sabha elections. He agreed and joined the BJP in 2014. He was announced as the BJP’s candidate for the 2014 general elections from Asansol Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal. He contested against Dola Sen of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and won by a margin of over 70,000 votes. On November 9, 2014, he was elected as a Member of Parliament and served as the Union Minister of State for Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation in the Narendra Modi government. He became the youngest minister in Narendra Modi’s cabinet. On July 12, 2016, his position was changed and he was appointed Minister of State for Heavy Industry and Public Enterprises.

In 2019, the Bharatiya Janata Party once again announced that he would participate in the 2019 general elections as the party’s candidate for the Asansol Lok Sabha constituency. This time his opponent is Senator Moon. Supriyo won the election by 200,000 votes. On May 31, 2019, he was appointed to the Narendra Modi cabinet as Minister of State for Environment, Forests and Climate Change.

On July 7, 2021, he resigned from the Narendra Modi Council of Ministers ahead of the cabinet reshuffle. On July 31, 2021, he announced on Facebook his decision to retire from politics and membership of the Lok Sabha party. On September 18, 2021, he attended the All India Trinamool Congress in the presence of Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O’Brien.

On August 3, 2022, Babul Supriyo took office as Cabinet Minister in the Government of West Bengal. He was subsequently appointed Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Information Technology and Electronics and the Ministry of Tourism. On September 11, 2023, the Ministry of Tourism was handed over to Indranil Sen; however, Supriyo was appointed as Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Information Technology and Electronics and the Ministry of Non-Conventional and Renewable Energy.

  • TMC MP Mahua Moitra filed a defamation suit against Supriyo. She said in the complaint that Supriyo damaged her reputation by saying she was drunk on country liquor during a live televised debate. His exact words were that Mahua was drunk on Mahua (country wine is also called Mahua in West Bengal).
  • He issued a statement in February 2018 demanding that all Pakistani artists be banned from operating in India and repatriated to Pakistan.
  • In March 2018, while addressing the public at a relief camp in Asansol, some members of the audience began chanting slogans against Supriyo. He lost his temper and threatened everyone that if they didn’t stop, he would skin them alive.
  • On September 18, 2018, he was attending an event for people with disabilities when he was distracted by a man who was moving. He screamed at him and threatened him to break his legs and give him crutches. He then reportedly asked security guards to break the man’s legs if he moved.
