Baby, 6 Months, Killed in Chicago Hit-and-Run While Being Transported to Hospital

A 6-month-old child who was taken to the hospital was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Chicago on Friday, according to news sources.

The Chicago Police Department told ABC7 Chicago, NBC Chicago and WGN9 that around 9:45 p.m., a Chevy SUV ran a red light and hit a Ford SUV at an intersection in the 6300 block of South Cottage Grove, which is on Chicago’s East Side.

Surveillance video from the scene obtained by ABC7 Chicago appears to show a white Ford SUV going through an intersection with a green light as a black Chevy SUV drives through. A black Chevy SUV struck the front of a white Ford SUV, tilting it to the right and nearly hitting a utility pole on the edge of the roadway.

In the Ford SUV were two parents who were on their way to the hospital to take care of their six-month-old daughter who had breathing problems, according to the media.

A man and woman, who were in a Chevy SUV, did not render aid and got out of the car and fled the scene before police arrived, WGN9 reports. The Chicago Police Department told the newspaper that they do not have anyone in custody in connection with the incident.

“The most upsetting thing is when people don’t get help and run away,” community activist Andrew Holmes told ABC 7 Chicago. “Sometimes it shows, what are you hiding? What are you afraid of? We don’t know if the car is stolen or not.”

The male and female passengers in the Ford SUV were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, while their 6-month-old child was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital where he died, WGN9 and NBC Chicago reported.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the 6-month-old child to NBC Chicago as Josette Williams and said an autopsy will be performed Saturday. It is not known whether the child died as a result of the accident.

The Chicago Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Other cars were damaged in the incident, according to ABC7 Chicago, but no one else was injured.
