The incident happened around lunchtime when the driver – believed to be in his 80s – tried to maneuver out of a parking space.
However, he crashed into the crowd as they attended a festive event at the top of the high street.
One witness, Esra Ward, who ran a pizza stand at the market, saw the whole thing unfold.
Speaking to the BBC, she said: “We were just talking to customers outside our van.
“The car was parked, and suddenly we saw it accelerate out of its parking space and hit several people.
“In front of the car was a mother with a baby in a stroller.
“Supposedly he hit a few other people from the back, a family. They had an ambulance and the police and they were all shot here in about five minutes.”
The fair, which used to be called Victorian Day, is very popular with families.
POLICE STATEMENT
A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said the collision was “low speed”.
The force said emergency services left the scene at around 2pm.
Despite the severity of the incident, the police reassured the public that the injuries sustained are not considered life-threatening or life-changing.
A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “We were called at midday on Sunday 1 December to reports of a car which had collided with pedestrians at low speed while maneuvering out of a parking space.
“The driver – believed to be a man in his eighties – and seven pedestrians, including five adults and two children, were treated at the scene by emergency crews.
“We would like to reassure people that despite the large emergency response no-one is currently described as having life-threatening or life-changing injuries.”
A police spokesman added: “Two young children, including the baby, have gone to hospital.”
They also said: “Two other adults were released from the scene by medics.”
Event organizers said they had been advised by police not to cancel the event on Christmas Day Sunday.
They also urged viewers not to take photos of those being treated or the scene itself.
In a post on their Facebook page, they said: “As many of you know there has been an incident at the top of the High Street.
“The police have advised us not to cancel today’s event so the rest of the High Street from Hobbs House Bakery towards Broad Street and Horse Street is still open.
“We would ask everyone present today not to take photos of the incident or speculate on social media as we work with the emergency services to help people who need help.”
