Badrul Islam was born into an Islamic family in India. When he was a child, he watched the Bollywood blockbuster Sholay, after which he became fascinated by movies and decided to become an actor. He studied at Jamia Milia Islamia in Delhi. While studying at university, he participated in street performances during cultural events. He also went to a village in Haryana to perform in a play, where he won the title of Best Actor. Later, he joined Shri Ram Center for Performing Arts, New Delhi, and worked at the National School of Drama, New Delhi.

In 2022, he played an autorickshaw owner in the Netflix romantic comedy film Plan A Plan B. In the same year, he played the role of journalist Tillu Mandothiya in the action-comedy film Action Hero starring Ayushmann Khurrana.
