Balachandran was born in Sri Lanka to a Tamil Hindu family. His ancestors belonged to the Thirumeni Kudumbam (also known as the Thirumeni family) who built the Sivan temple at Valvettithurai.
Parents and siblings
Balachandran’s father is Vellupillai Prabhakaran, a militant leader and founder of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). He was killed in a firefight with Sri Lankan troops in May 2009. Balachandran’s mother Mathivathani Erambu was reportedly killed by the Sri Lankan army; however, the army later denied killing her and said they did not know her whereabouts. Balachandran had an older brother, Charles Anthony, who was the head of the LTTE’s information and technology wing and was killed in a clash with the Sri Lankan army on May 18, 2009. In May 2009, during the final stages of Sri Lanka’s civil war, Balachandran Prabhakaran was killed and shot five times in the chest. The cause of Balachandran’s death is controversial. Reports and photos show the young boy being detained by Sri Lankan government forces. The images depict Balachandran alive and seemingly uninjured. However, later photos showed he died from gunshot wounds. Journalists for Democracy Sri Lanka (JDS) claimed that analysis of the photo metadata proved that the photos taken before and after the killing were taken with the same camera, just hours apart. Scottish film-maker Callum McRae, who made the film for British television station Channel 4, also claimed the camera images ruled out the government’s declaration that Balachandran was killed in the crossfire. He said,
His death was well thought out and calculated. There is no doubt that this is evidence of the execution of a child rather than a battlefield death,” Mr McCrae said. “The photographs are filled with gruesome details about the circumstances of his murder and have left a lasting impression on the Sri Lankan government. There are more questions to answer. ”

Forensic pathologist Professor Pond assessed the photographs and determined that Balachandran had been shot at very close range. He claimed,
There were spots on the propellant tattoo, indicating the distance from the weapon’s muzzle to the boy’s chest was two to three feet or less. He could have reached out and touched the gun that killed him. “
However, the Sri Lankan government denies any involvement in Balachandran’s death. Army spokesman Ruwan Wanigasuriya said,
The photos have “no substantive evidence” and were released in Mr McCrae’s latest documentary, Fire Free Zone (NFZ), which was filmed to coincide with a meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council next month.
The then President of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa claimed,
If it happens, I’ll know [it].Obviously, if someone [from the armed forces] Now that I did that, I must take responsibility. We are in total denial. This is impossible. “
Among the many theories surrounding Balachandran’s death, a Channel 4 report claimed to have the testimony of a frontline soldier commenting that the execution was carried out on orders from “higher ups”. He said,
Yes, our commander ordered us to kill everyone. We killed everyone. “A frontline soldier said. “Obviously, such an order was actually received from the top. ”
International human rights groups have called for an independent investigation into Balachandran’s death and other alleged war crimes in the final stages of the conflict.
