According to the formal name change proposal, the department’s new name will better “reflect the breadth of its scholarship and teaching.”

Most people think of “African American Studies” as being primarily American. According to the press release, however, the department investigates how race and Blackness are formed throughout the world, especially in Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, and Latin America.

Professor of sociology and African American studies Mary Pattillo stated in the announcement that “our work is expansive, beyond national or regional boundaries, and the word ‘Black’ is what captures that reach.”

The department was established as a result of a takeover of the bursar’s office by more than 100 NU students in 1968 to protest racial discrimination and to improve circumstances for Black students. In the original petition, protesters used the phrase “Black Studies,” which faculty mentioned in the suggested name change.

In April 2022, the faculty voted unanimously to endorse the name change. Faculty made an unofficial announcement of the move at the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the African American Studies department in May.

The Block Museum of Art will host a symposium, “Black to Front,” to commemorate the name change on Friday from noon to 6 p.m. Poetry, music, and panels made up of faculty and students will all be included in the event. Keynote addresses will be given by professor of American studies at Trinity College Davarian Baldwin and cultural and cinema critic Zeba Blay.

African American studies professor Barnor Hesse stated in the news release, “We expect our keynote speakers to be prominent in creating a compelling experience that stimulates more students to pursue Black Studies.” One of the lessons learned from the 2020 Black protests around the world is this.

Atarah Israel, a freshman at Medill who assisted in creating the symposium’s promotional materials, expressed gratitude for having participated in such a significant occasion. She remarked in the statement, “I am honoured to be a part of such a community here and abroad whose tenacity knows no end.
