Barry Sanders was born on July 16, 1968, to William Sanders in Wichita, Kansas. He completed his studies at Wichita North High School. Sanders began playing full-back in his sophomore year. He was promoted to run back in the fourth game of his senior year. Barry won the statewide title after dashing 1,417 yards in the final seven games of the season.
