Oakland Athletics selected Barry in ninth place in the first round of the 1999 selection, and he signed a $1.59 million prize money. In 1999, he made his professional debut with Visalia Oaks, the Oakland’s A affiliate, winning 3-0 with a 2.45 ERA in eight starts. He hit 62 shots in 40 thirds.
