Starr started playing football during his senior year of high school. His father gave him the option to play football or work in the fields. During his first year at Alabama, the Southeastern Conference allowed freshmen to play varsity football. He didn’t start for Alabama as a freshman, but he played enough minutes to earn a varsity letter.
Filling in at quarterback in the Orange Bowl, he completed 8 of 12 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown. In his sophomore season, he started at linebacker, safety and punter for Alabama. Similarly, in 1953 he had the second best punting average in the nation, averaging 41.4 yards per punt. Whitworth led the youth movement in Alabama in 1955, with only two seniors.
His back problem is reportedly resolved, but he hasn’t played much in the last year. Additionally, he began his career as a backup to Tobin Rote in 1956 and split time with Babe Parilli until 1959, Vince Lombardi’s first year as Packers coach. Lombardi benched starter Lamar McHan during that season in favor of Starr, who would eventually earn the starting spot. \ He led the Packers to an 11-3 record in his first season as the full-time starter, passing for more than 2,400 yards and 16 touchdowns. In 1962, he and the Packers went undefeated, going 13-1.
