Far falls is almost here!
PEOPLE has an exclusive look at a scene from Hulu’s upcoming six-part film from Baz Luhrmann, which is an extended cut of his 2008 epic. Australia starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman.
“With room to breathe, we were able to build the world and develop the character in a different way, such as restructuring the scene when Lady Ashley, played perfectly by Nicole Kidman, arrives at Faraway Downs,” Luhrmann, 61, tells PEOPLE.
The director describes the never-before-seen footage as a “Katherine Hepburn/Spencer Tracy scene” between Kidman, 56, and Jackman, 55, in which they “decide whether Lady Ashley (Kidman) is going to stay the night or come right back.”
“This scene wasn’t in the movie and we were actually surprised, when we looked back at the original movie, that it wasn’t in the final cut,” he adds. “The way this plot point was handled Australia it is significantly different. There was a lot of real artistic space that, due to the nature of the film, had to be compressed.”

Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman lead the epic trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s miniseries Far falls
Far falls it was originally published as Australia, which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design at the 81st Academy Awards. Luhrmann originally announced that he would remake the film into a six-chapter version, complete with a new ending, back in June 2022.
“When we were shooting the film Australiawe ended up with more than 2 million feet of film, so the concept of epic, episodic storytelling seemed exciting to me,” he tells PEOPLE now.
And, he insists, those behind the new project “did not approach Far falls with the concept of replacement” of the film Australia — instead, they treated it “as a way for the creative team to revisit the story and look at it as a composer might look at variations of past compositions or another composer’s work.”
“Although I wouldn’t say Far falls is better than AustraliaI’d say it’s much richer, allowing us to build on the primary theme embodied in the retelling of the story of the young Native boy, in a way that only chapter storytelling allows,” adds Luhrmann.
Trailer for distant falls, released last month, meets Kidman’s wife Sarah Ashley as she arrives in Australia some time after her husband’s death to take over his property, called Faraway Downs. When she gets there, she meets a cattle rancher, played by Jackman, and a native child named Nullah (Brandon Walters), who teaches her to love the countryside.
