The journalist, originally from Wexford, Ireland, was jogging outside when he collapsed after suffering a suspected aneurysm, STV News reports.

He passed away yesterday with his family by his side.

Nick was known for presenting Reporting Scotland, Drivetime, Nine and Seven Days as well as Good Morning Scotland on BBC Radio Scotland.

He was a huge fitness enthusiast and shared many posts on his social channels of him running, hiking and wild swimming around Scotland.

In a statement, news and current affairs presenter Gary Smith said: “Nick was a wonderful colleague.

“He was an extremely talented journalist, presenter and writer – and one of those rare people who light up the lives of everyone around him.

“Our hearts go out to his parents, his partner and all his family and friends.”

STV news and current affairs presenter Linda Grimes-Douglas spoke of the “somber” atmosphere in the newsroom, while BBC staff will hold a “minute of reflection” after today’s Reporting Scotland broadcast.

Nick’s close friend and former colleague Emma Cameron recalled his passion for “musical theatre, Irish culture, journalism and food”.

Weather presenter Philip Petrie said: “There were countless early Good Morning Britain shifts that he and I shared where he would entertain the weary with stories, jokes and even some renditions of Disney classics.”

Nick has worked in broadcasting for over a decade.

The award-winning presenter also wrote a series of books for children about journalism.

He made a famous laugh in 2017 live on STV news.

Nick was reading a story about a naked pensioner and his wife who went wild late at night in a luxury hotel in Perthshire.

He previously spent two years reporting and presenting RTE News2day.

He later left his staff position at the BBC to focus on writing, but continued to present as a freelance journalist.

Paying tribute at First Minister’s Questions this afternoon, Humza Yousaf told the chamber: “On behalf of the Scottish Government and the party I lead, I wanted to say how saddened we were to learn of the loss of Nick Sheridan.

“Nick was an extremely talented journalist and we will miss him greatly.

“Many of us will no doubt be questioned very seriously by Nick, whether it was on BBC Drivetime or the many other programs he hosted.

“My thoughts are with his family, his many friends and colleagues at what will undoubtedly be a very sad time.”

Friend Connor Gillies wrote on Xu, formerly of Twitter: “A uniquely talented TV presenter, writer and journalist, but above all a thoroughly decent, witty, considerate friend who was a lot of fun.

“An absolute pleasure to know Nick. He thought of everything before himself.

“I’ll always remember the outrageous night out antics.”

TV and radio presenter Amy Irons said: “Absolutely devastated. The world has lost one of its brightest human beings and journalism has lost one of the most talented people I have ever had the pleasure of working with.

Siobhan Synot said: “Very sad news that BBC Scotland presenter and children’s author Nick Sheridan has passed away.
