Behr Paint Reveals Their ‘Bold’ New Color of the Year for 2025: A 'Reimagined, Luxurious' Red!

Behr Paint is going big for their Color of the Year 2025!

On August 21, the company announced “Rumors,” a reimagined deep ruby red that adds “warmth and rich appeal inside and outside the home” as their choice for next year.

“Red, it’s just a timeless color,” Erika Woelfel, vice president of Color and Creative Services, tells PEOPLE. “We talked about it. It was outside. Artists used it. Designers used it.”

“It just feels good, it feels sophisticated. It feels bold, but it’s still affordable. We’re drawn to it and it’s really stunning,” adds Woefel, who is also a color expert and leads a team of nearly 30 creative individuals in graphic design, color services, development website, photos and visual merchandising materials.

Behr Paint just announced its color of the year for 2024 — so we’ve found home decor to match, starting at just $9

While the color is a dramatic departure from past years, which included a soft black in 2024 and a warm white in 2023, research shows that buyers are ready for more colors.

According to a Behr press release, “more than three-quarters (76%) of Americans would consider painting a room or wall a shade of red,” while “about three-quarters (73%) believe that embracing red can add depth to living spaces, and more half (61%) agree that bold red walls are warm and stunning.”

For people who are afraid of incorporating color into their home, Woelfel suggests starting small.

“You can place Rumora around the fireplace to create a really nice moment in the living room. If you’re just looking for something small, if you live in an apartment or space where you can’t change much, you can paint a piece of furniture. You can repurpose a found piece and create a really beautiful statement with a piece of furniture, a chair, a table, a dresser,” she says.

“You can also go big with it. This is where you really make a statement, when you create a color-drenched room in the dining room or living room, or install an accent wall in the bedroom to highlight the headboard and create a beautiful focal point. It grabs your attention and is really, really captivating.”

Choosing the next Color of the Year is a lengthy process that begins almost immediately after the previous winner is announced.

“It takes us probably a year to put together the color of the year, the trend palette, all the content that comes around that,” says Woelfel, adding that the team considers a “wide range of influences” when considering options.

“We look at what’s happening in fashion and home decoration, lifestyle. What people do. Hobbies. What they eat. Where are they going. What are they talking about. What really resonates. There are all these different factors. One of the things we noticed while doing research for this year is that people are really interested in playing with color. I think they’ve been living in the neutral zone for a while.”

When “Rumors” emerged as a top contender, Behr knew it was the perfect choice.

“This red was one of those colors that we’re starting to see bubbles appear. It has a very nostalgic association. There’s that vintage feel to the nineties, but it’s not granny red. It’s really been reinvented for 2025. It’s a reinvented red that gives a luxurious feel wherever you put it in your home. Whether you’re going big or small with it, it’s just very versatile on so many different levels.”
