Ben Collins, a tech reporter for NBC News, has been prohibited from covering Elon Musk or Twitter indefinitely after regularly making fun of the businessman on the social media platform, according to a report on Friday.
According to the news site Semafor, Collins was informed earlier this month by higher-ups at 30 Rock that his tweets criticising Musk were not editorially appropriate.
Collins has been fired from NBC and MSNBC but is still employed there. He has been tweeting and retweeting frequently about the most recent information regarding Musk’s contentious choice to deactivate the accounts of several left-leaning journalists who had criticised his control over the social media platform.
The NBC News representative who responded to The Post’s inquiry said: “We don’t comment on personnel matters.”
Collins, who has more than 380,000 Twitter followers, was frequently warned by NBC News management about opinionated remarks regarding Musk, according to a source familiar with the incident who spoke to The Post.
According to the source, Collins was reminded of the organization’s journalistic standards, which prohibit reporters from expressing their personal opinions on subjects they are charged with covering.
Collins won’t be able to cover Twitter or Musk on any NBC properties, including the network’s broadcast network, cable news channel MSNBC, and the company’s website and social media accounts, the person told The Post.
Collins was demoted at the same time that Musk suspended six journalists for breaking Twitter’s terms of service by linking to an account that tracked the businessman’s private jet trips.
Musk was criticised for banning Jack Sweeney, a college sophomore from Florida who ran the Twitter account, as well as his flight-tracking accounts that tracked the private jets of Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, and others.
The businessman released a video of the alleged stalker driving a white Hyundai to his Twitter account. Musk asserted that the man leaped onto the hood of his car, which at the time was transporting his small son.
