Ben & Jerry’s Co-Founders Reveal Kamala Harris Ice Cream Flavor — And It’s Inspired By a Viral Meme

Kamala Harris sent the internet into a frenzy when she said, “You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?” Now the viral quote is the inspiration for the candy.

Ben & Jerry’s ice cream brand co-founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield teamed up with MoveOn, a political advocacy group, to create a dessert inspired by the vice president and current presidential candidate.

Here’s the news: Kamala’s Coconut Jubilee, coconut ice cream with caramel swirls and red, white and blue star sprinkles, will travel the country in the “Scoop the Vote” ice cream truck, making 20 stops in battleground states.

Free ice cream sundaes and cones will be given out at each stop, and attendees can enter for a chance to win an autographed limited edition flavor. Fans can also enter the drawing at ScoopTheVote.com. Volunteers and elected officials will get on the bus and talk to voters in swing states to discuss a plan to get on the ballot by Nov. 5, according to MoveOn’s website.

Move on

MoveOn CEO Rahna Epting said USA Today that non-political activities can engage potential voters. “There’s a bunch of people who are already involved in this election, and there’s a huge, huge pool of people who aren’t,” she said.

Kamala’s Coconut Jubilee is not sold under the Ben & Jerry’s label and fans can only taste the treat at the free ice cream truck. Each pint features a photo of Harris surrounded by palm trees and red, white and blue stars. The label says “Ben’s Best” in a font similar to the Ben & Jerry’s brand.

The flavor was inspired by the Vice President’s speech on May 10, 2023. The speech at the White House focused on advancing opportunities for Hispanic individuals. The mention of the viral coconut was part of a sentiment Harris’ mother used to tell her when she was a child.

“Because none of us live only in a silo. Everything is in context,” she explained in her speech. “My mother knew – sometimes she’d pester us, and she’d say, ‘I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. You think you just fell off a coconut tree?’ ”

Then, after a beat, she added in a more solemn tone, “You exist in the context of everything you live in and what came before you.”

The audio has become a TikTok trend, with Harris’ fans posting coconut and tree emojis on social media.
