Beth Broderick and Caroline Rhea Tease Special Sabrina the Teenage Witch Easter Egg in Their New Hallmark Movie (Exclusive)

Beth Broderick and Caroline Rhea bring their witchy magic to Hallmark’s Countdown to Christmas.

Best known for her role as Aunt Zelda and Aunt Hilda on ABC’s — and later The WB’s — hit series Sabrina the teenage witchBroderick, 65, and Rhea, 60, reunite for Hallmark Channel’s new holiday movie Holiday mismatchpremiering Sunday, November 3, at 8:00 PM ET.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the movie stars teased the special Sabrina An easter egg Rhea snuck into the film for fans to spot.

“[Rhea] wore a piece of clothing from Sabrina that he thinks people will recognize him, which is a pretty unmistakable piece of clothing, but I don’t want to give it away,” says Broderick. “People will have to figure that out for themselves.”

Broderick, who also stars in Netflix Merry gentlemen this November, got nostalgic Sabrina also fun. “I have a necklace from Aunt Zelda that I snuck in once or twice,” she adds.

Meanwhile, Rhea recalls briefly falling into Aunt Hilda’s shoes during filming. “I once pointed out using magic – which I thought was a hilarious thing – just out of habit,” she reveals.

Determined to stop the romance, the two mothers team up, only to realize they have more in common than they thought, according to the official synopsis. “As their children’s love blossoms, so does an unexpected friendship between their meddling moms.”

According to the actresses, playing Barbara and Kath felt like revisiting Zelda and Hilda in a way.

“Kath is like Hilda, totally free spirited,” says Rhea, before joking: “I always seem to play free women, I don’t know what that is.”

Broderick agreed, adding that the dynamic between their latest characters is “pretty similar because we’re portrayed so damn well.”

“You know, Caroline is an extrovert, I’m an introvert,” she says. “I remember walking to the set with Caroline one day years ago when we were Sabrinaand she looked at me and said, ‘Oh my God, I just got it. You’re a total nerd.’ And I say, ‘Right now, did you just realize that?’ ”

Ultimately, the opportunity to work with her longtime comedy partner again is what led Rhea to suggest Broderick as her co-star. Holiday mismatch.

“I suggested they hire Beth because what it brings them is, first, it’s like a fun twist of nostalgia,” says Rhea, noting that the friends and actors “have been doing comedy for so long” that they have a “common history” to draw from when they work together. .

She continues, “I just thought why not take the natural comedic chemistry that Beth and I had on that show and put it in a different scenario.”

It was a no-brainer for Broderick to join her friend in creating holiday magic, and she said the film sounded like “a lot of fun.”
