Sharma’s political career began during his student days when he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) through the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, a student body. Later, he rose to be the district joint convener and co-zila pramukh of ABVP in Bharatpur. At the age of 27, Bhajan Lal Sharma joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJYM) and became the village head of his hometown, serving for two consecutive terms. Later, he served as a member of the Panchayat Samiti of the village.
In the 1990s, he served as BJYM regional president three times during JP Nadda’s tenure as president. After working in the BJYM for a few years, he was appointed as the district secretary of the BJP. In the 2003 assembly elections, Sharma contested from the Nadbai assembly constituency of Bharatpur on the ticket of the Rajasthan Samajik Nyay Manch (RSNM). However, he placed fifth, receiving more than 5,900 votes, accounting for 6.28% of the total votes cast. Bhajan Lal Sharma later became the president of the Bharatpur district unit of the BJP and later served as the party’s state vice-president. He was subsequently promoted to General Secretary of the National Party in charge of headquarters. At the same time, he was also elected as the leader of the Legislature of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Bhajan Lal Sharma is serving as the general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Rajasthan for the fourth consecutive term when he contests the 2023 assembly elections from Jaipur Sangana constituency. He defeated his opponent, Indian National Congress candidate Pushpendra Bhardwaj, by 48,000 votes.
In 2023, he was first elected as a provincial councilor from the Jaipur Sangana constituency and was subsequently elected as the 14th Chief Minister of Rajasthan by the Bharatiya Janata Party. Former Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje reportedly recommended Bhajanlal Sharma’s name during the BJP’s legislative session.

Facts/Trivia
- Sharma played a crucial role in the ABVP protests in 1990, when thousands of students from across the country gathered in Jammu. They marched towards Srinagar to protest against attacks on Kashmiri Pandits in the valley. He was arrested from Udhampur in Jammu along with many other members.
- In 1992, during the Ram Janmabhoomi riots in Ayodhya, where the Babri Masjid was demolished, he actively participated in the protests led by the Vishva Hindu Parishad and its allied organizations. He was arrested during the protest and sent to jail.
- A member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Bhajan Lal Sharma holds the record of being the longest-serving general secretary of the Rajasthan Bharatiya Janata Party unit.
