The Punjab Police arrested Kishore after her car hit a woman named Gagan in Ludhiana on May 5, 2023, injuring her hand. She was charged under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 and sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing injury to any person endangering life of others by acting recklessly or negligently) and 427 (mischief, thereby endangering the lives of others) is registered. On May 7, 2023, the duty judge ordered the Superintendent of Ludhiana Central Jail to release her after signing a bail bond. - When she was arrested by Punjab police in May 2023 for allegedly beating a woman with a car and making derogatory remarks about her, the police’s actions were condemned by many journalists. In a statement by the Editors’ Association, the FIR’s booking of her at the Ludhiana police station “appeared to be excessive and hasty”.
- AAP leader Atishi commented on the incident and said that no one is above the law and police and the matter should be left to the courts.
- The Chandigarh Press Club also issued a statement on the incident, saying there were no female police officers at the time of her arrest and she was not allowed to reveal the matter to her family. In the statement, it further said,
If a person is hit by a car, under which law is the passenger booked? How did people know the caste of the complainant and use derogatory language against his caste? Which of these three people used such language to explain specifically? “
- On May 10, 2023, she was released on bail. After her release, she recounted her time in prison and said she was required to use the restroom with the door open. In an interview, she spoke about this and said:
I wasn’t feeling well, so I ate [they gave]. The driver and cameraman also ate a little. I drank a lot of water because I was nervous. When I went to the bathroom, there were 2-3 female police officers accompanying me.The police station has no electricity or water [I was kept in]. I was allowed to use the hospital restroom where there were clothes stained with blood. I feel like I’m going to throw up. I saw dead bodies in the hospital late at night. If I think about it again, I feel the same way again. “
