Bhupendra Patel served as the member of Munnagar Municipal Corporation from 1995 to 1996, 1999 to 2000 and 2004 to 2006. He served as Chairman of Ahmedabad School Board from 2008-10. In 2012, Bhupendra Patel floated the idea of fee reductions to builders to encourage building regulatory schemes, a move that was appreciated by then chief minister Narendra Modi. From 2010 to 2015, he served as Thaltej Ward councilor. During the same period, Bhupendra Patel also served as the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. On September 12, 2021, he was elected as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. Vijay Rupani, the former Chief Minister of Gujarat, resigned as the Chief Minister of Gujarat on September 11, 2021. Journalist and political analyst Faisal Bakili said in an interview with BBC media,

On September 13, 2021, he was sworn in as the 17th Chief Minister of Gujarat.
