Big Boi: Career Highlights

Following four increasingly successful albums as a duo, Outkast’s two members decided to create two solo albums and release them as a double album under the Outkast moniker. Patton dropped Speakerboxxx, while André 3000 dropped The Love Below. The two albums were released as Speakerboxxx/The Love Below in 2003. Speakerboxxx was similar to Outkast’s previous efforts, whereas The Love Below ventured into more unusual territory, with André 3000 singing rather than rapping as usual. One song from each album was released as a single in September 2003.

Patton’s selection was the single “The Way You Move,” which featured Sleepy Brown. Initially supported by urban radio, it eventually crossed over to pop charts and became nearly as big a pop hit as Benjamin’s “Hey Ya!” “The Way You Move” surpassed “Hey Ya!” to become the number one song on the US pop charts. The second single from Big Boi’s side of the album, “Ghetto Musick,” featured both members of Outkast as well as a sample from Patti LaBelle’s “Love, Need, and Want You.”

On November 22, 2005, Patton released a mixtape/compilation album titled Got Purp? Vol 2 in collaboration with the Purple Ribbon All-Stars via Purple Ribbon Records; Aquemini Records had gone out of business after Benjamin left the company. The album’s first single, “Kryptonite,” peaked at number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100. Patton was also featured in the song “International Players Anthem (I Choose You)” from UGK’s album Underground Kingzon.

Following the release of the sixth album under the Outkast moniker, Idlewild, in 2007, Big Boi announced plans to release a full-fledged solo album. While Big Boi had previously released a solo album under the name Speakerboxxx, it was still technically under the Outkast moniker. Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty was supposed to be the title of the album. The album’s first promotional single, “Royal Flush,” was released in 2007 and featured Raekwon and André 3000. Over the next few years, the album was delayed numerous times, but several promotional and video singles were released, including “Shine Blockas” featuring Gucci Mane, “For Yo Sorrows” featuring George Clinton, and Too Short, and “General Patton” featuring Big Rube.

The first official single, “Shutterbugg,” featured Cutty, and the second, “Follow Us,” featured Vonnegutt. The album was released internationally on July 5th. Guest artists include Janelle Monáe, an alternative urban songstress; Big Boi’s own new group Vonnegut; and established rappers B.o.B and T.I. Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty received widespread praise from music critics for its inventive sound, varied musical style, and Big Boi’s lyricism.

Patton announced on February 27, 2011, that he was working on a collaborative album with rappers Mike Bigga and Pill. On April 28, 2011, Big Boi announced that he would be collaborating with Modest Mouse on their upcoming album Strangers to Ourselves. These collaborations have yet to be made public.

Patton revealed in a July 2010 interview with The Village Voice that he is working on Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors, the follow-up album to Sir Lucious Left Foot, and that he is “maybe about six songs into it.” On November 13, 2012, the album was released. The album’s first single, “Mama Told Me,” featured Kelly Rowland. ASAP Rocky, Little Dragon, Ludacris, T.I., Phantogram, Kelly Rowland, and B.o.B. made appearances on the album.

Patton later revealed in 2012 that he was ten songs into his third studio album. In January 2014, he reiterated his intention to release a new studio album. Big Boi was featured on the Catch The Throne mixtape with the song “Mother of Dragons,” which was released for free download on SoundCloud by HBO on March 7, 2014, to promote the fourth season of Game of Thrones.

On March 21, 2014, it was announced that Big Boi had signed a management contract with Jordan Feldstein’s Career Artist Management. On May 10, 2014, it was also revealed that Big Boi had signed a record deal with Epic Records.

Patton announced on April 19, 2017, that his third studio album, Boomiverse, would be released the following day, along with two singles, “Mic Jack” featuring Adam Levine and “Kill Jill” featuring Killer Mike and Jeezy. In 2018, Big Boi signed to L.A. Reid and Charles Goldstuck’s new label Hitco Music.
