Bihar’s education ministry withdraws order to reduce holidays for school teachers amid controversy

Bihar School Teachers Holidays

The Bihar education department withdrew the holiday order for teachers after it proved controversial. A government order has shortened the days off for school teachers in Bihar on the occasion of Diwali, Raksha Bandhan, Durga Pooja and other festivals.

A recent circular issued by the Director of Secondary Education states: “The holiday table issued to government-aided primary and secondary/higher secondary schools under the memorandum of order No. 2112 dated 08/29/2023 is canceled with immediate effect.”

Bihar’s Ministry of Secondary Education had previously announced a reduction in holiday for teachers from 11pm to 11am. This led to an uproar among teachers in the state. They even warned the authorities about the expected protests.

Teachers protest wearing black badges, questioning logic

In defiance of the order, some teachers in most schools were seen holding classes wearing black badges. Others went to the extent of questioning the Additional Chief Secretary of the Education Department, KK Pathak. Some teachers also claimed that the attendance of students will be negligible on festive occasions. Therefore, there is no point in asking teachers to come and attend classes.

The opposition government in the state i.e. BJP also condemned the decision to curtail holidays on festive occasions: Rakshabandhan, Dussehra, Diwali, Chatth etc.
