News Bilal Coulibaly
Adam Silver after being selected seventh overall by the Indiana Pacers in the NBA basketball draft on June 22, 2023 in New York. John Minchillo for AP PhotosBilal Coulibaly briefly assumed the identity of Indiana Pacer. The Washington Wizards later acquired him in a trade.
Coulibaly had a busy night in the NBA draft on Thursday, which was also important for his nation.
With four players drafted in France this year, including two selected by the San Antonio Spurs, the nation is experiencing a basketball renaissance. Four or more French players were selected in the same draft for the second year in a row and the third time overall.
Coulibaly and respected French teammate and No. 1 pick Victor Wembanyama also made draft history by becoming the first two players from France to be selected in the top 20, according to data released by the league.
After being selected No. 7 by the Pacers, Coulibaly said, “Here we go” before being traded. “We were coming.” France has already arrived, actually.
The country remains a basketball hotspot thanks to Wembanyama, a generational talent who joined the Spurs (French great Tony Parker’s former team) and Coulibaly, a dynamic 18-year-old forward.
France has produced more NBA players than any other nation outside of North America, according to the league.
Coulibaly is the fourth French player selected in the top 10, after Wembanyama, Killian Hayes (7th overall in 2020) and Frank Ntilikina (8th in 2017). Coulibaly exclaimed: “I am very happy for French basketball.” “We are expanding our presence in this league. So just be happy about it.
Rayan Rupert, the French winger who last played for the New Zealand Breakers, had to wait longer than expected. Rupert, the last remaining draftee, was selected by Portland in the second round with the No. 43 pick.
Sidy Cissoko joined Wembanyama in San Antonio after being drafted. Last year, Cissoko made history as the first talent from Europe to compete for the NBA G League Ignite. Another star, forward Zaccharie Risacher, who turned 18 in April and is quickly emerging as a talent, is on the horizon. He competed in France’s first professional league with the Parker-owned team ASVEL and helped his country finish third in the 2022 FIBA U-17 World Championship.
In time for the Summer Olympics in Paris in 2024. Coulibaly noted: “We only hope for the best for French basketball and the French national team. “We’ll see what happens this summer. I’m not sure if I’ll join the French team. Let’s wait, watch and pray.”
