Billy Ray Cyrus and Tish Cyrus’ Relationship: A Look Back

After two previous requests for divorce, Billy Ray Cyrus and Tish Cyrus finally decided to go their separate ways in April 2022.

“We’ve grown up together, raised a family we can be so proud of, and now it’s time to forge our own paths,” the former couple told PEOPLE in a joint statement.

The couple first married in 1993, and eventually had three children: Miley, Braison and Noah. Billy Ray also adopted Tisha’s children, Brandi and Trace.

The “Achy Breaky Heart” singer and Tish have had ups and downs during their nearly three-decade relationship. Billy Ray previously filed for divorce in 2010, but eventually withdrew the request a few months later. Tish filed for divorce in 2013, but they ended up getting back together after going to couples therapy.

After parting forever, the former spouses found new love. Billy Ray married Australian singer Firerose in October 2023, while Tish married actor Dominic Purcell in August 2023.

The two first met at a club sometime in 1991, just a year before the country singer’s hit song “Achy Breaky Heart” was released. At the time, Billy Ray was homeless and living in his car, and in a previous interview with PEOPLE, he said, “It wasn’t pretty.”

November 23, 1992: Billy Ray Cyrus and Tish Cyrus welcomed their first child together

In November 1992, the two welcomed their first child together, Miley Cyrus. That same year, Billy Ray also had a son named Christopher Cody with another woman.

In October 2010, Billy Ray filed for divorce from Tish. “As you can imagine, this is a very difficult time for our family,” they said in a statement. “We are trying to sort out some personal matters. We appreciate your thoughts and prayers.”

A month later, it was reported that Tish had an affair with Bret Michaels, which the Poison singer eventually denied. “The answer is no,” he said during a guest appearance on Fox & Friends.

“I’ve always been friends with her family,” Michaels added. “It started with me and Miley just working on a song together. Her mom, Tish, loves ‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn,’ the first concert Miley ever saw was Poison, so they wanted to cover it for the new record.”

February 2011: Billy Ray Cyrus opens up about “fixing” his relationship with Tish Cyrus

During the interview at View in May 2011, Billy Ray revealed that he and Tish had called it quits. “I gave up on the divorce,” he said. “I want to get my family back together. Things are the best they’ve ever been.”

“I feel like I kind of got my Miley back,” he added. “I feel like we’re dad and daughter the way we used to be Hannah Montana happened.”

About three years after Billy Ray ended their divorce, Tish filed for divorce in June 2013. “This is a personal matter and we are working to find a resolution that is in the best interest of our family. Please respect our privacy in this moment,” she said in a statement to PEOPLE.

In a separate statement to PEOPLE, Billy Ray said, “This is a personal matter and we are doing what is in the best interest of our family. Please respect our privacy at this time.”

July 2013: Billy Ray Cyrus and Tish Cyrus call off their divorce

A month after filing for divorce, Billy Ray and Tish seemingly reconciled when they posted a cozy photo on Instagram with the caption, “Date Night.”

“We both woke up and realized we loved each other and decided we wanted to stay together,” the couple later said in a statement. “We both went to couples therapy, something we haven’t done in the 22 years we’ve been together, and it brought us closer and really opened up our communication in amazing ways.”

August 2016: Billy Ray Cyrus opens up about how he and Tish Cyrus make their marriage work

In an interview with PEOPLE, Billy Ray talked about how he kept his marriage to Tish going after two near-divorces over the past six years.

“Life is a series of adjustments, and you just try to do the best you can,” said Billy Ray. “For example, if you’re going to parallel park your car and you start backing up, and you don’t quite fit into it, you have to back up a little bit. In honor of their 25th wedding anniversary, Tish posted a photo on Instagram on December 28 of her and Billy Ray from the wedding of daughter Miley and actor Liam Hemsworth. In the photo, taken just five days earlier on December 23, Tish and Billy Ray stand next to Miley in her wedding dress, surrounded by roses.

Tish captioned the photo, “25 years ago today @billyraycyrus and I stood in our living room in Franklin Tn and said ‘I do.’ I would definitely say it’s over!”

She also posted another photo of her and Billy Ray when they were younger with the caption, “I love you Lovey…..if I had it to do over I wouldn’t change a thing.”

April 6, 2022: Tish Cyrus files for divorce from Billy Ray Cyrus

On April 6, 2022, Tish filed for divorce again in Williamson County, Tennessee, citing “irreconcilable differences,” according to documents obtained by PEOPLE. She also said that the couple has not lived together for more than two years.

“After 30 years, five amazing children and a lifetime full of memories, we have decided to go our separate ways – not with sadness, but with love in our hearts,” reads a joint statement the couple issued exclusively through a family representative to People. “We’ve grown up together, raised a family we can be so proud of, and now it’s time to create our own paths.”

August 19, 2023: Tish Cyrus marries Dominic Purcell

Tish and Purcell said “I do” during a poolside wedding in Malibu, California. The bride wore a long white dress and a veil during the ceremony. Her children Miley, Brandi and Trace were in attendance.

October 10, 2023: Billy Ray Cyrus married Firerose

After a year of engagement, Billy Ray married his fiancee, Firerose, on October 10. The newlyweds announced the happy news in a joint statement posted on Instagram.

“10/10/23 will always be a beautiful, joyful day when our two souls joined as one in holy matrimony,” they wrote. “It was the most perfect, ethereal celebration of love we could have ever imagined.”

The couple continued: “For both of us to hear the preacher say, ‘Billy Ray and Firerose Cyrus… I now pronounce you husband and wife’ was a sacred moment as our new eternity began. Long live love!”

February 7, 2024: Tish Cyrus opens up about her divorce from Billy Ray Cyrus

During the performance at Call her dad podcast alongside her daughter Brandi, Tish opened up about why she and Billy Ray decided to split for good in 2022. “It wasn’t in a good place for a long time. I think I stayed so long out of fear. Literally fear of myself,” she explained. “I met him when I was [was] 24. That’s how I grew up… [and] he was such a big part of it.”

She added that at the beginning of COVID, she could have had a “difficult view of life” because Billy Ray stayed in Nashville and Tish stayed in California to be closer to her daughters Miley and Noah. “Then being alone and suddenly just taking the weight of the world off your shoulders in a way and [I] she could only breathe,” she said.

She added that in addition to Billy Ray, her mother, Loretta Finley, also died at that time, causing her to experience a “complete mental breakdown.” She noted: “I couldn’t eat. I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t stop crying. I literally weighed, like, 103 lbs. … I don’t have a mom, and then I don’t have a husband either [who’s] was my husband for 30 years.”

When asked by host Alex Cooper if she wished she had left the marriage during her previous divorces in 2010 and 2013, Tish said yes, but added that she wanted to protect Noah, who was still very young at the time.

“When I look back on it, it would have been better for her if I had gone. It would have been much better,” she added.
