Bipan Chandra is a famous Indian author, historian and professor. He is considered one of the outstanding Indian historians. He is known for his famous book India’s Independence Struggle. His specialty is Modern Indian History. His first work was The Rise and Growth of Indian Economic Nationalism: The Economic Policies of the Indian State Leadership, 1880-1905, published in 1966. Bipan Chandra was born on Saturday, May 24, 1928 (he was 86 years old at the time of his death) in Kangra, Punjab, British India (now in Himachal Pradesh, India). His star sign is Gemini. Bipan Chandra is Professor Emeritus of Modern History at Jawaharlal Nehru University and an Indian author, teacher and renowned historian. After Senator McCarthy launched a campaign to deport Bipan Chandra back to India for his alleged links with American Marxists, Chandra returned to India in the 1950s and began working as a lecturer at the Delhi Hindu College. During this time, he also pursued a doctorate at the University of Delhi. His doctoral dissertation, titled “The Rise and Growth of Economic Nationalism in India,” re-established the efforts of earlier patriots, including Dadabhai Naoroji, RC Dutt, and GV Joshi, who had initiated India’s anti-colonial struggle.

Mr. Chandra started working as a professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University in the 1970s and was awarded the title of “Professor Emeritus” upon his retirement in 2007. In 1985, the Indian History Congress in Amritsar, Punjab, appointed Professor Bipan Chandra as its General President. In 1970, Bipan Chandra was awarded the title of National Professor by the University Grants Commission. The National Book Trust of India appointed him as its Chairman, a position he held from 2004 to 2012.

Contribution to modern Indian history

Bipan Chandra founded the journal Inquiry in the early 1950s and served on its editorial board for a long time. Chandra taught history at Delhi University for 43 years. The book Sectarianism in Modern India (1984) is an analytical work on sectarianism compiled by Chandra. Bipan Chandra wrote a monograph In the Name of Democracy: JP Movement and Emergency (2003) in which he relates past events of Indian history to the present situation of modern India. In this monograph, he expressed nervousness about the imposition of Emergency by Indira Gandhi between 1975 and 1977. The same monograph also pointed out that Jayaprakash Narayan’s pro-sectarian movement violated many principles of the Indian Constitution.

Bipan Chandra is the main founder of economic history. In one of his works on economic history, he points out:
