In 1996, she was spotted in a hotel by the Indian model Mehr Jesia Rampal in Kolkata. Mehr suggested Bipasha participate in the Godrej Cinthol Supermodel Contest (organised by Ford) in Mumbai. She participated in the contest and won the title.

Indecent TV Commercial
At the beginning of her career, she appeared in a TV commercial for an undergarment brand Calida along with her then-boyfriend Dino Morea. In the commercial, they posed sensually which was not well received by the audience. Some people from women’s organisations even protested in front of her house for promoting indecency. In an interview, while talking about it, Bipasha said,
I regret doing that advertisement. The truth is I am not very comfortable with my body. I was roped into doing it because my boyfriend Dino Morea and the ad-photographer, Prabhudda Dasgupta, who is a friend, were a part of the campaign. Now, I had worn a proper t-shirt and underwear, but while taking the photographs, there were some personal snaps taken as well, which were not meant to be used. The agency released one such photograph.”

In 2001, while she was shooting for the Hindi film ‘Ajnabee’ along with the Indian actress Kareena Kapoor, the actresses had a fight over fashion designer Vikram Phadnis. Vikram was Kareena’s designer, and when Vikram tried to help Bipasha, Kareena got very upset with Bipasha. Reportedly, they had a verbal as well as physical fight with each other. In an interview, Kareena made a nasty comment on Bipasha by calling her a Kaali Billi (black cat). After this Bipasha decided that she would never work with Kareena again. However, in 2008, Kareena invited Bipasha to Saif Ali Khan’s birthday party and resolved their issues.
