Glee actor Blake Jenner was arrested and charged with DUI on July 16. Jenner allegedly failed to stop at a red light, causing police to pull him over. The actor was later arrested for a minor DUI. The event, however, drew attention to his failed marriage to Supergirl’s Melissa Benoist, who has previously spoken out about being attacked in their relationship.
Melissa Benoist’s lawsuits against ex-husband Blake Jenner
Blake Jenner’s ex-wife Melissa Benoist, who married him in 2015, revealed in 2019 that she was a victim of domestic abuse. In an emotional video on Instagram, Melissa revealed her ex-husband’s months-long violence.
She says in the video:
“I am a victim of domestic abuse, often known as IPV (intimate partner violence), which is something I never expected to say, even on air.”
Although Benoist did not identify her alleged abuser, she described him as “a generous guy, who really didn’t give you an option not to be attracted to you.” The 33-year-old actress went on to say that a person “can be charming, witty, cunning or malicious.”
She continued, saying:
“I wasn’t interested in that for a long time. I was newly alone, finding support at a moment of transition in my life, making rash decisions… However, in the midst of all that, he became a friend. A friend who made me laugh and feel less alone, who made me feel unique and valuable, and then when we started dating, the catapult was zero to sixty… He adored me. I believed that I loved him and that I could do it.”
The actress also stated that the abuse was not physical at first, but that over time the abuser began to threaten her privacy by monitoring her technological devices. When she would leave their residence, the abuser would force her to change her clothes. The actress went on to say that “work, in general, was a difficult problem” for her abuser, and asserted:
“He didn’t want me to kiss or even have flirtatious moments with men, which was very hard for me to avoid, so I started turning down auditions, job offers, test contracts and friendships because I didn’t want to hurt him.”

Blake Jenner’s oblique response to the allegations
Blake Jenner commented on Instagram on October 9, 2020 and openly addressed Benoist’s allegations. The actor said in a statement that he accepts “full responsibility” for his behavior and stated:
“I accept full responsibility and liability for the emotional, mental and, yes, physical harm I caused during my relationship with my previous partner.”
Blake Jenner also alleged that he carelessly threw his phone at one of the events, hitting his ex-girlfriend “in the face.” He stated:
“I stopped in amazement and fear while my partner at the time was screaming in pain, and her eye was swollen shut from the force of the phone. It’s a memory I’ll have for the rest of my life.”
In a 2019 Instagram post, Benoist recalled being hit in the face with an electrical device. The force of the phone “tore my iris, almost burst my eyeball, tore my skin and crushed my nose,” she said. Blake Jenner also said that she intends to “improve” and that she will “never make the same mistakes again.”
