Bob Stoops began working for the University of Iowa in 1985 as a graduate assistant. Consequently, he was named their assistant coach in 1987. After playing for the Sooners for two seasons, he transferred to Kent State. He spent only one season working for the team. In 1989, he was also hired by Kansas State University to be their new defensive coordinator. In 1996, he was named the new defensive coordinator at the University of Florida.

Later, in 1999, he named Bob the new head coach at the University of Oklahoma. He led his club to the national championship and the Big 12 Conference title in 2000.
