Bobby Bonilla, former New York Mets player, is Puerto Rican. But he’s a New Yorker through and through. Bonilla was born and raised in the Bronx, in a large family that included twin sisters and a brother. His father, Roberto Sr., was an electrician, while his mother, Regina, was a homemaker. In a 1991 New York Times interview, Bonilla described his difficult upbringing in the South Bronx. Gang members have made this area difficult to live in. Bonilla described an incident that occurred while he was grocery shopping. He was just outside the door when he heard the shots and immediately rushed to his mother, telling her that he might have to sort out the goods.
Growing up, the former MLB star idolized his parents, he said. They did a lot to make his ambitions come true. Unfortunately, his parents did not stay together, but Bonilla had a good relationship with his stepmother Ann. Ann, his parents, brothers, uncles, aunts and cousins were there the day Bonilla was introduced as a New York Mets player in 1991. In recent years, Bonilla has played an active role in promoting baseball in Puerto Rico. Bonilla, along with several other baseball players of Puerto Rican descent, was part of a union that founded the Puerto Rican Summer League in 2014. The Summer League was one approach to increase the opportunities for Puerto Rican youth to enter the MLB.

Bobby Bonilla had an almost flawless love story until his disastrous divorce in 2009. Bonilla married his high school sweetheart, Madiglia “Millie” Bonilla, in the late 1980s. The couple has two children: Brandon and Danielle. Bobby has mentioned in several previous interviews that his Millie helped him stay healthy, but things seem to have soured after retirement. The former couple fought a long legal battle, and a judge ordered Bobby to split his assets with her. Millie accused Bobby of holding back. But by 2011, everything seemed to be settled and Bobby began receiving deferred compensation from the New York Mets.
Bobby is married to Christina Solomon-Bonilla and they have a son, Roman Solomon. Brandon, Bobby’s oldest child, followed in his footsteps. Brandon, born October 21, 1993, played college baseball at Grand Canyon University before joining the Baltimore Orioles. He was a 25th round pick of the Orioles in 2014.
Brandon, unlike his father, did not aspire to a major league career. Brandon last appeared in the New York-Pennsylvania League in 2018 for the Aberdeen IronBirds. Bobby and his family have stayed away from social media. But Bonilla has given several interviews in recent years, including one with CBS News in 2017.
