Bobby Kinnar is an Indian transgender politician and a member of the Aam Aadmi Party. In December 2022, she became the first member of the transgender community to represent a constituency in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

Bobby Kinnar was born in 1984 in Sultanpur, New Delhi (age 38 in 2022). As soon as Bobby was born, her parents knew she was different from other children. As she grew older, people began to notice changes in her and began to treat her differently. She had to drop out of school after passing ninth grade due to bullying and harassment at school. When Bobby was 15 years old, her family gave her away to the transgender community due to social pressure; Bobby was adopted by a transgender guru. Thereafter, she began living with the transgender community in Sultan Majira, where she became known as “Bobby Darling”.

Parents and siblings
Bobby’s father, Om Prakash, used to run a small Dhaba in Delhi’s Sultanpur area. Bobby died when he was a child. She has a younger brother who works in a private company in Delhi. She also has a sister. She and her siblings were raised by their mother, who worked odd jobs to support the family. When Bobby was 15 years old, he was adopted by a transgender guru (who has passed away). Bobby said in an interview that her biological mother loved her very much and she still kept in touch with her family and visited them every month.

At 21, Bobby joined an NGO where he learned to read and write. As a member of an NGO, she was involved in social work such as helping the needy and providing education to underprivileged children. Bobby also helped about 15 girls get married at his own expense. In 2011, she participated in the Anna Hazare anti-corruption movement. As of 2022, Bobby serves as the Chairman of the Delhi Chapter of the Hindu Yuva Samaj Ekta Awam Counter-Terrorism Committee and has been associated with the company for approximately 15 years. Bobby also ran a primary school in her area, providing education to less fortunate children.

After joining Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption movement, Bobby joined the Aam Aadmi Party. After that, she actively worked for the party. In 2017, she hopes to contest the Delhi Municipal Corporation elections on the Aam Aadmi Party’s behalf. However, she had to contest the election as an independent candidate as the AAP rejected her candidature. During the campaign, she accused parties of corruption and said parties were demanding Rs. 50 lakhs in exchange for tickets. She lost the election. In 2022, Aam Aadmi Party announced Bobby Kinnar as its candidate for Delhi Municipal Corporation elections from Sultanpuri A Ward-43, making Aam Aadmi Party the first political party in India to offer votes to transgender people . After receiving the vote, she told the media that she entered politics for public welfare and that if she won the election, she would empower the transgender community. She said,
If I win the polls, it will send a strong message and encourage trans people to come forward and make their mark like they have before. Nowadays people in our society are moving away from politics. There are many educated people in our society. I want all these people to enter politics and engage in social services so that our reputation can also improve in society. “
Furthermore, speaking about the problems faced by common people in her area, Bobby said people have to pay bribes to get small jobs done and documents produced. She said,
If I become a member of Parliament, I will work to eliminate corruption. I will not allow officials to take bribes and public works will be done free of charge. “

While campaigning for the polls, she promised to fund the education of less fortunate children and bring the work of the Kejriwal government to the public. In December 2022, Bobby Kinnar won the MCD election, defeating Indian National Congress candidate Varuna Dhaka by 6,714 votes. In a media chat after her win, Bobby thanked the people who worked so hard for her. She said,
I want to dedicate my victory to those who worked so hard for me. I want to thank everyone. Now I just have to work for the development of my area. “

In May 2011, a man named Ramesh of Mangol Puri police station lodged a complaint against Bobby Kinnar. Ramesh alleged in his complaint that Bobby conspired with other transgenders including Haribuddin, Ram Babu, Lakshmi and Shobha to chop off Ramesh’s private parts. Later, Ramesh went to Rohini court to prosecute all the accused. In its final verdict, the court held that Ramesh chose voluntary castration for financial gain.
