The state of California sued Activision Blizzard in 2021 on the grounds that it had developed a persistent culture of harassment over the years. The lawsuit details “bucket cruising,” in which male employees get tired and run around the office behaving inappropriately toward female workers.
It was alleged that male employees delegated tasks to their female colleagues, that women of color were passed over for promotions to less senior employees, and that a senior World of Warcraft developer was so notorious for harassing women that his office was nicknamed the “Cosby Suite.
“However, the lawsuit announcement was just the first in a series of reports detailing the many forms of harassment that occurred within Activision Blizzard. Current and former employees recounted their experiences, describing how sexual harassment by an employee led to suicide, how a woman was demoted for allegedly reporting a harasser, how milk was taken from a nursing mother’s office refrigerators, and other incidents.
In the midst of this investigation, The Wall Street Journal published an article accusing Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick of knowing, ignoring, and occasionally harassing his employees.
Kotick denied certain claims, including one in which he allegedly threatened to kill his assistant in a voicemail, but apologized for others.
In a new interview with Variety, Kotick again denied claims that Activision Blizzard had widespread abuse issues. Instead, he blamed the company’s problems on the unions.
“We have carried out every type of investigation imaginable. And we never had problems with systematic harassment, ”she added in the conversation. But we had a very active and determined labor movement that was trying to undermine business.
Kotick argued that Activision Blizzard has a relatively low number of harassment complaints for its 17,000 employees, calling the news of harassment and abuse a “mischaracterization.” In a transparency report released Wednesday, the corporation outlined its progress toward a number of goals, including hiring more women and increasing the number of harassment complaints it received and addressed. The report says the company investigated 116 complaints and was able to substantiate 31 of them.
