Boygenius Releases Touching, Charitable Cover of ‘The Parting Glass’ in Honor of Sinéad O’Connor: Listen

On Friday, the trio of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker released a cover of “The Parting Glass,” a traditional Irish and Scottish song popularized by the late Irish star. All proceeds from the release will be donated to the Aisling Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing out-of-school intervention to young people in need in the Dublin area.

The “Not Strong Enough” band also teamed up with Irish duo Ye Vagabonds for a cover. Together they create a seductive, touching indie-folk cover in honor of the singer-songwriter who died at the age of 56 in July.

Slowed down by O’Connor’s Celtic-sounding instrument-rich rendition, the cover is full of muted strings and tender yet haunting vocal performances. Each member of the Grammy-nominated trio gets their moment to shine, as their Irish guests back them up in harmony.

“So fill me a parting glass / And drink to health whatever happens / Then gently stand up and quietly call / Good night and joy to everyone,” the group repeats, as if sharing a sweet farewell to the “Nothing Compares 2 U” artist.

The indie group took to Instagram to announce the release, sharing a cover with a smiling photo of O’Connor and an opening in the caption about the project.

“‘The Parting Glass’ featuring @yevagabonds is out now,” they wrote.

The trio went on to share that O’Connor’s estate collaborated with them on a special charity edition. boygenius continued: “As chosen by the estate of Sinéad O’Connor, proceeds will go to the @aisling_project, an out-of-school project working with children and young people growing up in a disadvantaged area in Dublin, Ireland.”

Bridgers, 29, also shared a piece of artwork on her personal Instagram and added a touching note. After the teasing release, she also dedicated the song to her father, with whom she had a complicated relationship and confirmed that he passed away earlier this year. “For Sinéad and my dad,” the “Motion Sickness” singer wrote.

The group “Cool About It” is one of a number of stars who have paid tribute to O’Connor since her death. Musicians who have shown their love for the singer/activist include fellow Irish icons U2, Pink, Brandi Carlile, Foo Fighters, Alanis Morissette and more.

The “Beautiful Day” group and tourmates Pink, 44, and Carlile, 42, took the stage to perform her 1990 hit “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which was originally written and composed by Prince.

The Dave Grohl-led group and Morissette, 49, meanwhile, teamed up at Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival to sing a joint cover of O’Connor’s 1987 single “Mandinka.”

A month after her death, O’Connor’s children Jake, Roisin and Yeshua, as well as her extended family, shared a statement in The Irish Times to express their gratitude for the outpouring of support they have received.

“Sinéad’s children, along with Sinéad’s extended family, would like to thank the countless kind people who have sympathized and offered their condolences on Sinéad’s recent death,” the statement said. “Their helpful support to the family is greatly appreciated.”

boygenius’ cover of “The Parting Glass” also comes as part of Bridgers’ periodic, charity holiday single series. The singer-songwriter started the tradition in 2017 with a cover of the holiday classic “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”. Since then, she has released covers of McCarthy Trenching’s “Christmas Song,” Simon and Garfunkel’s “7 O’Clock News/Silent Night,” Merle Haggard’s “If We Make It Thru December,” Tom Waits’ “Day After Tomorrow,” and Handsome Family. “So much wine.”
