Treliving was hired by the Leafs on Wednesday, making him the team’s 18th general manager overall. In a statement issued by the franchise, Treliving said, “I am very delighted and privileged to join the Toronto Maple Leafs as general manager. “I want to express my gratitude to Brendan, MLSE, and its Board for their assistance during this process.
“I’m excited to join an Original Six team and am aware of how important the Maple Leafs are to this neighbourhood. For myself and my family, today is a really exciting day.
Shanahan added, “I’m thrilled to welcome Brad to the Maple Leafs organisation. With his years of experience as a general manager and hockey executive in Calgary, Arizona, and elsewhere, Brad brings a wealth of information to the table.
“Throughout his time in the NHL, he gained a great deal of respect from his colleagues and cultivated top-notch connections with people at all levels of the game. We have faith that Brad’s managerial abilities and strategic perspective will advance the Maple Leafs in our ongoing quest for a title.
The 53-year-old had served as the Flames’ general manager for nine seasons, during which time the team made five playoff appearances, before coming to an agreement to part ways on April 17. The native of British Columbia formerly spent seven years as an assistant general manager of the Phoenix Coyotes (before they changed their name to the Arizona Coyotes) and seven years as the president of the Central Hockey League.
In other words, Treliving hasn’t faced many challenges throughout his tenure as a hockey executive.
Two problems with the Leafs stand out in particular: the situation with No. 1 centre Auston Matthews, whose contract can be extended on July 1—the same day a no-move clause takes effect—and the situation with No. 2 centre.
It’s true that Shanahan informed the core four that he intended to ensure that they all returned for the following season, if they so desired.
Does Treliving have the same emotions? What if he provided Shanahan with a scenario during the interview that contained a workable course of action without one of Matthews, Mitch Marner, or William Nylander? Or will Treliving follow Shanahan’s line of reasoning on the Leafs’ core and work to preserve it?
There is no need to speculate about John Tavares’ future. Tavares has two years left on his deal, and he has made it clear he won’t waive his no-move clause.
