Bray Wyatt (1987-2023) was an American professional wrestler who participated in many wrestling promotions including WWE, NXT and FCW for more than ten years. He died of heart disease in August 2023.

He graduated from Hernando High School in Brooksville in 2005. He was inspired by his father to become a wrestler and won the state wrestling championship in 2005 when he weighed 275 pounds (125 kilograms). He later attended the College of the Sequoias, where he also played two seasons of American football (football) as a defensive tackle and linebacker and was a second-team All-American as a sophomore offensive guard. He later received a football scholarship to pursue a bachelor’s degree at Troy University in Alabama. However, approximately two semesters (27 credits) before completing his degree, he dropped out of college to pursue a professional wrestling career.

Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW)
On February 5, 2009, Bray Wyatt made his FCW debut against Brian Jossie. He then made his television debut on FCW in April 2009 under the ring name of Alex Rotundo, later changed to Duke Rotundo. He later started playing doubles with his brother Bo. They won the FCW Florida Tag Team Championship on July 23, 2009, defeating Justin Angel and Kris Logan, which they lost to The Busters on November 19, 2009.

In March 2011, he began fighting under the ring name Axl Mulligan; however, during televised matches, he fought under the ring name Husky Harris. On February 2, 2012, he won the FCW Florida Tag Team Championship for the second time with his younger brother Bo. In April 2012, he began fighting under the Bray Wyatt ring name.
WWE NXT
On June 2, 2010, Bray joined WWE NXT as Husky Harris, where he was paired with Cody Rhodes in a tag team. He made his TV debut on June 8, 2010. On August 17, 2010, he was eliminated from NXT. In November 2012, he formed a group called “The Wyatt Family”, with Luke Harper as his eldest son and Erick Rowan as his second son.

World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE)
He made his television debut (in disguise) on October 4, 2010, by attacking John Cena in a Hell in a Cell match, and his identity was revealed on October 5, 2010. He later became a member of the group The Nexus. He left WWE after being attacked by Randy Orton on January 31, 2011. On July 8, 2013, he made his debut as the head of the Wyatt family and attacked Kane, who subsequently attacked a number of different wrestlers, including Drew McIntyre, Heath Slater and Kinder ·Mahal. On August 18, 2013, he participated in his first main lineup match, SummerSlam’s Ring of Fire match, against Kane and won.

As head of the Wyatt Family, he later had serious feuds with Daniel Bryan and John Cena, facing them at the 2014 Royal Rumble, 2014 WrestleMania 30, and 2014 Payback respectively.

In September 2014, promos aired on television showing Wyatt releasing Harper and Rowan. In the 2015 Royal Rumble, he played 47 minutes before Big Show and Kane knocked him out. On February 22, 2015, he went public, declaring himself the new face of fear. On March 29, 2015, he lost to The Undertaker at WrestleMania 31.

In July 2015, the Wyatt Family returned and on August 24, 2015, Braun Strowman was introduced as the new member of the Wyatt Family (commonly known as the New Wyatt Family). Wyatt and Rowan were drafted to Smackdown during the 2016 WWE Draft, while Strowman was drafted to Raw, ending their relationship. On October 25, 2016, Randy Orton joined the Wyatt Family, and Wyatt and Orton later became tag team partners. On December 4, 2016, he won his first WWE Championship by winning the SmackDown Tag Team Championship at Tables, Ladders, and Chairs (TLC) 2016. On February 12, 2017, he won his first WWE Singles Championship at Elimination Cage 2017.

Randy Orton later feuded with the Wyatt family and tore the Wyatt family compound into pieces, which included Sister Abigail’s grave. On April 2, 2017, Wyatt lost the title to Orton in a match at WrestleMania 33. In November 2017, he feuded with Matt Hardy using the “Deleters of Worlds” gimmick, and Hardy fought him using the “Broken” gimmick. In April 2018, Wyatt and Hardy became a tag team partner and won the Raw Tag Team Championship at the Greatest Royal Rumble on April 27, 2018.

In April 2019, many promos aired on WWE programming showing Wyatt as the host of a sinister show called “Firefly Fun House” in which he cuts cardboard with a chainsaw. He then appeared in a gimmick called “The Demon” wearing a demon mask. On October 31, 2019, he defeated Seth Rollins and won the Universal Championship. He later released two belts, one for the Firefly Fun House character and one for the Demon gimmick.

On February 27, 2020, he lost the title to Goldberg. At WrestleMania 36, he defeated John Cena, his first and only WrestleMania victory. He later feuded with Braun Strowman, Finn Balor, Kevin Owens, Roman Reigns and Randy Orton. He later formed a brief partnership with Alexa Bliss. His last game on television was on January 28, 2023 at the 2023 Royal Rumble against the Los Angeles Knights.

Bray Wyatt died of a heart attack on August 24, 2023 at the age of 36. It was later revealed that he had tested positive for Covid-19, which made his bad heart condition worse. WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H confirmed his passing in a tweet, and several other wrestlers, including The Rock and Mick Foley, have since expressed their condolences.
