Steele turned pro in 2005 and has won four events on the Golden State Tour. He competed on the Canadian circuit in 2006 and 2007, finishing second at the 2006 Telus Edmonton Open. In 2008, he joined the Nationwide Tour. In 2010, he won the Nationwide Tour Championship at Daniel Island, the last tournament of the season. Steele received his PGA TOUR card for the 2011 season and won his first professional tournament in April of that year, the Valero Texas Open.
It was a narrow victory, but he clinched it with a seven-foot par putt on the 18th hole. In 2011, he was the third PGA TOUR rookie to win. The victory earned him a TOUR card through the end of 2013, as well as invitations to THE PLAYERS Championship, the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, the 2011 PGA Championship and the 2012 Masters. Steele moved up from 115th to 19th in the FedEx Cup standings as a result of his win.
