An early Christmas present from Lady Whistledown has arrived: a premiere date for Bridgerton season 3!
Netflix announced Tuesday that the hit series will premiere in two installments, with the first on May 16 and the second on June 13. Both parts will have four episodes each.
“Dear reader, you thought I was silent, but you were wrong,” says Julie Andrews, who voices Lady Whistledown, in the season three teaser.

The upcoming installment will focus on the new romance between Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton).

Coughlan previously described the third season as “so romantic” to PEOPLE.
“There were a lot of moments on set when we were shooting something and we’d turn around and everyone would be clutching their chests like, ‘Oh my God,'” the 36-year-old actress said in June. “It was such a love.”

In the beginning Bridgerton season 3, Penelope found herself in social trouble after telling her best friend and Colin’s younger sister Eloise (Claudia Jessie) as Lady Whistledown. As a result, Penelope must chart a new path.
“She’s like a woman on a mission,” Coughlan said of her character. “She is ready to go, ready to launch herself on the marriage market in a new way. He wants a whole new look and he gets it.”

Bridgerton season 3 deviates from the book series on which the show is based, choosing to follow Penelope and Colin’s relationship rather than Benedict Bridgerton’s love story, which is the focus of Julia Quinn’s third book.
“There are eight Bridgerton siblings, so we plan to follow the romantic stories of each of them,” Bridgerton executive producer Shonda Rhimes previously said Party tonight. “We’re not necessarily going in order, but we’re going to see each of the siblings and their stories.”

Penelope’s outfit in season two actually hinted at her upcoming part of the story. In episode 4, Penelope swapped her usual yellow dresses for a dress in a softer shade of green. Bridgerton costume designer Sophie Canale confirmed a fan theory to PEOPLE that the switch symbolizes the merging of the yellow color palette of Penelope’s family and the blue color palette of the Bridgertons.
“I’ve known for a very long time,” Canale said of the third season after the fourth Bridgerton a book, Romantic Mr. Bridgerton. “I actually forgot that no one else knew until last night. It’s also useful as a tool to know where your characters are going.”
She added that the combination of Penelope and Colin’s family color reflects how the blue color palette worn by Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) in the first season changed after her marriage to Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page), who wore red.
‘Bridgerton’ cast: Everything you need to know
Season 3 began filming in July, with three newcomers – Harry Dankworth (James Phoon), Lord Debling (Sam Phillips) and Marcus Anderson (Daniel Francis) – joining the cast. Netflix said that what Phoon’s character “lacks in wit and intelligence, he more than makes up for in serious good looks.” Phillips will play a “genius lord with unusual interests” who intrigues young ladies in search of love. Francis’ Marcus has a “charismatic presence” that “lights up any room he walks into, attracting the attention of certain matriarchs in the tone—and the ire of others.”
