Bridgerton's Production Designer Has to Make Sure Furniture on Set Can 'Stand Up to' Show's Steamy 'Intimate Scenes'

Special attention is paid Bridgerton adjust the furniture thanks to the steamy nature of the show.

Production designer Alison Gartshore, who has been working on the hit Netflix drama Regency since 2020, revealed in an interview with Architectural Digest to test the scenography for intimate scenes in the series.

In the clip, Gartshore said the process begins when the team “reads the scripts.”

“Obviously, if you know Bridgertonyou will know that there are a lot of intimate scenes in the series,” she teased as she made her rounds Bridgerton family residence. “I don’t want to give you spoilers, but we always have to make sure that where we have these intimate scenes, the furniture is up to the job, so to speak.”

The new season of the Shonda Rhimes-produced series follows the long-awaited love story of Penelope and Colin, which unfolds in the fourth Julia Quinn Bridgerton novel, Romantic Mr. Bridgerton.

At the beginning of the season, Penelope distanced herself from the Bridgerton relatives after hearing him say that he would “never dream” of courting her. Fresh from his trip, Colin tries to win Penelope back by teaching her how to find a husband.

Actors Luke Newton and Nicola Coughlan, who play Colin and Penelope, have opened up about filming their intimate scenes – with Coughlan revealing they broke a piece of furniture on set.

“Yes hell yes we are,” Coughlan, 37, said at a Season 3 launch event in Australia when asked to confirm reports of furniture damage.

Her on-screen love interest, Newton, posed another challenge he faced during filming. The actor told PEOPLE exclusively that “you can’t really prepare for stripping in front of your friends.”

In a 2023 interview with PEOPLE, production designer David Ingram opened up about how the intimate scenes were filmed in Bridgerton spin-off Queen Charlotte: The Bridgerton Storywhich follows the marriage of the titular queen to England’s King George.

Ingram revealed that while most of the series was shot on location, bedroom scenes often had to be filmed in a nearby studio due to the limitations of older homes.

“In a lot of these stately homes, you can’t have intimate scenes in the beds. You can’t touch the beds. You can’t move the beds,” Ingram said. “We built the scenes in the bedroom and the scenes behind the house [sound]stage.”

The first part of Bridgerton season 3 premieres on May 16, and part 2 comes out on June 13. Seasons 1 and 2 Bridgerton – as well as Queen Charlotte: The Bridgerton Story — are now streaming on Netflix.
