British man, 31, who Jay Slater was with at AirBnb before vanishing insists missing teen ‘left the house alive’ – The Sun

A 31-YEAR-OLD Brit who Jay Slater was staying with on Airbnb before he disappeared has insisted the missing teenager “left the house alive”.

Ayub Qassim invited Jay, 19, back to his rented holiday home after a rave in Tenerife hours before he disappeared on June 17.

Qassim booked a £40-a-night holiday rental online under the name Ayub Abdul.

Jay is known to have returned to the remote cottage – called Casa Abuela Tina – at 5am on the day he disappeared.

But Qassim told MailOnline that Jay “left AirBnb alive” and stressed he “didn’t even do anything”.

The British tourist told the outlet: “The only comment I have to make is that Jay came into the house alive and he left the house alive.

“I let the weirdo stay with me because he had nowhere to go, all his friends had left him.

“I know Jay through a friend, I won’t return someone to my family if I don’t know him.

“I’m doing him a favor and now my face is all over the news. It’s a little mental. I didn’t even do anything.”

Qassim is said to have returned to the family flat in Barking, east London.

He insisted that he didn’t fight with Jay and even gave him a blanket to sleep on.

Qassim, who was jailed nine years ago for masterminding a sophisticated operation to flood Wales with class A drugs, said: “If I had fallen out with him, would he have even come to me?

“There was no problem. You saw the last pictures of him with the red blanket around him.

– I don’t know if he ate beef somewhere else because I don’t know him that well, I only know him through a friend.

Shocked and ‘wary’ Brit Tenerife holidaymakers say they are turning on phone tracking after Jay Slater’s disappearance

Spanish police looking for Jay have already spoken to Qassim and his unnamed friend – and both have been described as “irrelevant” to their investigation.

Qassim confirmed he had spoken to Spanish authorities in Tenerife and said he had “done nothing wrong”.

But the 31-year-old said foreign police officers told him not to talk to anyone else, which kept him quiet.

Asked how well he knew Jay and what he thought of the conspiracy theories surrounding his disappearance, Qassim said: “Everybody knows each other. I’m not going to slander anyone.

“He’s a cool guy, Jay. He doesn’t have a problem with me, I don’t have a problem with him or his friends.”

Qassim added that he and Jay’s friends were just talking to each other and that “everything was sweet.”

Jay is known to have left the property around 7.30am to catch a bus back to his suite.

The witness said that he asked her when the next bus was.

When she told him the next one wasn’t until 10am, he is believed to have attempted to walk the 11 hours it would take him to get back on holiday.

Qassim and another unnamed man stayed for another day after Jay disappeared and spoke to Spanish police.

They gave their information to the police and fully cooperated in the investigation.

Jay was on his first holiday without his family when he went missing while returning to his accommodation last Monday morning.

No one has seen or heard from the apprentice bricklayer since he called his friend at 8:50 a.m. to tell her he was lost, needed water and that his phone battery was low.

Spanish police announced over the weekend that they would end the search after 12 days.

But Jay’s friends and family vowed to keep searching the island’s Rural de Teno Park, hoping to find him.

‘IN THE DARK’

It comes after Jay’s dad questioned why his teenage son ended up at a remote Airbnb with “two grown men” hours before he went missing.

Warren Slater, 58, believes the investigation into his son’s whereabouts should focus on a holiday in the Tenerife village of Masca.

Dad Warren, who was today searching the narrow ravine near the village of Masca where Jay was last seen, added that police were not saying much to the family about their investigation.

He added that he had become “frustrated” and “angry” that more had not been done to find his son.

He said: “I’ve been through a bit of grief and I’m angry, if that makes any sense. I’m angry that nothing happened.”

The lack of information drove Warren to become a detective himself.

“The police here are doing their own investigation. They’re not really telling us anything, they’re not telling you much, we’re in the dark,” he said.

“All I do is the Colombo bite. I mean, he could be here, you never know, but as a dad I don’t want him to be.

Just don’t disappear. He’s a young guy, he’s in shape. He’s better than all of us put together.

“He has played football all his life, he is as healthy as a flea. Just don’t disappear.

“If I leave you here and then you just disappear, don’t you think the police would be on my case?”

Warren said he will never give up trying to find his missing son.

Five questions still unanswered about Jay Slater’s disappearance

Written by James Halpin

Rolex missing after ‘fight’

Police launched a new investigation Saturday morning into the theft of a Rolex watch just hours before Jay went missing.

It’s unclear how Jay’s disappearance might be connected, but one of Jay’s friends told detectives that the alleged theft may have led to Jay wandering off on his own to try to find the watch.

The Rolex went missing when a fight broke out at the club where Jay was partying, and investigators questioned taxi drivers and bar staff who were on the strip.

Police clear duo

Two mystery Brits who were partying with Jay Slater on the night he disappeared have been branded “irrelevant” by investigators.

Detective Mark Williams-Thomas said the men had stayed with Jay at an Airbnb in Tenerife before he disappeared.

Both are said to be in their late 30s or early 40s and from Luton, Bedfordshire, with one nicknamed “Johnny Vegas”.

The men were only asked to speak to officers briefly before being allowed to fly home to the UK.

Only six volunteers for the ‘massive’ search

Yesterday, Tenerife police launched what they called a “massive” new search with the help of specialist volunteers to find the 19-year-old Briton.

However, only six volunteers reportedly showed up, according to Tiktoker Paul Arnott (29), who flew in to help in the search.

Jay’s father Warren and older brother Zak were seen at the scene of the search.

The area being searched is a 2,000-foot gorge that has a steep footpath that descends to the sea.

Mysterious last phone calls

Jay’s last phone call to his friend Lucy Law was shrouded in mystery and opened up several questions.

The 18-year-old woman told reporters that Jay called her in a panic at around 8.30am on Monday 17 June.

She recalled him saying he couldn’t catch the bus and would walk back to his apartment.

Jay told her that his phone was almost out of power, that he cut his leg on a prickly cactus, and that he really needed a drink.

Ping phone

Search teams narrowed their efforts to a small group of buildings near where Jay’s phone last pinged, but found nothing last week.

Jay went on a 45-minute car journey with two men to an Airbnb near Masco in Rural de Teno, a national park in the north of the island.

He posted a Snapchat picture of the £40-a-night dig around 7.30am, in which he appeared to be holding a cigarette and walking down stone steps.

After deciding to leave the cabin, Jay called Lucy before his cell phone went dead at 8:50 a.m. near the park’s hiking trail.

He was with Jay’s brother Zak and the teenager’s uncle who joined the desperate hunt in the 17 days since Jay went missing.

It comes after a private investigator discovered that Jay “stole a Rolex” before he disappeared.

It is claimed that Jay admitted to snapping the precious watch on Snapchat to friends after leaving the club in the early hours of June 17.

Today, former detective Mark Williams-Thomas made the incredible claims about Jay in an eight-minute video.

He said the apprentice bricklayer from Lancashire posted a Snapchat the night before he disappeared saying he had taken a £12,000 Rolex from an unknown person.

According to Mark – who worked on the Madeleine McCann case – the teenager shared the post with friends while in a hire car.

The TV detective said evidence suggested Jay left the rental property “terrified”.

Jay’s GoFundMe is being used to fund volunteer detectives, including British amateur climber Paul Arnott.
