Britney Spears is celebrating her 43rd birthday — and she’s getting a gift of sorts from the California courts.
The pop star was declared legally single on Monday, Dec. 2, seven months after her divorce from ex-husband Sam Asghari was finalized in Los Angeles on May 2, according to documents obtained by PEOPLE.
Spears and Asghari (30) separated at the end of July 2023, just 13 months after the star wedding. He filed for divorce in August 2023, citing irreconcilable differences.
“The divorce was amicable and the prenup was not contested,” a source told PEOPLE of the divorce in May. “Britney continues to exercise her freedom and move on.”

Spears showed off that newfound freedom in October, when she posted a video of herself in a wedding dress on Instagram, telling fans she “married myself.”
“The day I got married… I’m bringing it back because it might seem awkward or stupid, but I think it’s the most brilliant thing I’ve ever done!!!” the “Toxic” singer wrote in her post.
The Grammy winner recently hung out with her youngest son Jayden (18), whom she shares with her ex-husband Kevin Federline. The former couple, who split in 2006, are also parents to son Sean Preston, 19.
A source told PEOPLE last month that Spears reunited with Jayden in Los Angeles, where they hung out at her home.

Britney Spears’ Ex Sam Asghari Talks Life After Divorce: ‘You Make Your Own Bed’ (Exclusive)
Asghari, meanwhile, told PEOPLE in November that he was “absolutely” able to move on with his life after the divorce and is focused on work. The actor and fitness trainer is set to appear in the third season of the popular series Peacock Traitorswhich will premiere next month.
“It’s a bed you make yourself and you have to learn to lie in it, so it’s part of the way of life,” he said. “You just have to be positive. You have to stay grounded and understand what the truth is and really just live with that and not other people’s opinions or anything like that.
Asghari also spoke to PEOPLE in March about his split from Spears, revealing that he bears no ill will toward his ex.
“It was a blessing to be able to share life with someone for a long time, people separate and move on,” he said. “I’ve always hated people who leave a certain relationship — and at some point they told each other they loved each other and were sitting at the same table eating food [together] — so I never understood when people split up [and] they talk bad about each other. It’s something I’ll never do because I’ve just had an amazing experience and a great life, and it’s always going to be a part of my life, a chapter of my life.”
