Britney Spears’ Father Hospitalized with Bacterial Infection, Now in Outpatient Facility

Britney Spears’ father Jamie has been hospitalized with a bacterial infection, PEOPLE can confirm.

The 71-year-old was seriously ill and was hospitalized due to an infection, but now he is in the infectious disease clinic and recovering. Page six was the first to report that Jamie was hospitalized.

Jamie’s rep did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

This is not the first time Britney’s father has been hospitalized in recent years. In November 2018, he became “seriously ill” and was rushed to Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas, where his colon “spontaneously ruptured”. According to a statement from Britney’s team obtained by PEOPLE at the time, Jamie underwent emergency surgery and was hospitalized for 28 days.

After a long, complicated postoperative period, he is recovering at home and getting stronger, and a full recovery is expected, the press release said.

“I’m devoting my focus and energy to taking care of my family,” added Britney (41) in a statement at the time. “We have a very special relationship and I want to be with my family at this time just as they have always been there for me.”

Two months later, the singer opened up about her father’s health on X (formerly known as Twitter), where she said in a since-deleted post that she would be taking an indefinite break from work and postponing her Las Vegas stay, Domination.

“It’s important to always put your family first… and that’s a decision I had to make,” she wrote in January 2019. “A few months ago, my father was hospitalized and almost died. We are all very grateful that he came out of it alive, but he still has a long way to go.”

Jamie also shares daughter Jamie Lynn, 32, and son Bryan, 46, with ex-wife Lynne, 68.

Britney has had a complicated relationship with her family since she was placed in a conservatorship in 2008 that lasted more than a decade and ended in November 2021. Two months before the conservatorship ended, her father was removed from his role as guardian of Britney’s estate.

In May, the “Lucky” singer revealed that her mother had visited her home for the first time in three years.

“My sweet mom showed up at my door yesterday after 3 years … it’s been so long … with family there are always things to work out … but time heals all wounds !!!” her post on Instagram began.

Discussing her feelings about the reunion, Britney continued: “After being able to communicate what I’ve been holding on to for a very long time, I feel so blessed that we were able to try and make things RIGHT !!! I love you 💕 so much !!! Psss … I’m so blessed that we can have coffee together after 14 years !!! Let’s go shopping afterwards !!!”

Britney’s upcoming memoir, The woman in mewill be released on October 24. PEOPLE exclusively revealed the July release date, following the 2022 announcement that the singer had signed a book deal with Simon & Schuster.
