Britney Spears reflects on the ways in which her rise to fame has been treated differently in the media than that of her male counterparts.
In his new memoir The woman in meSpears writes that she “couldn’t help but notice” that when she was dating Justin Timberlake in the early 2000s, he was often asked less invasive questions than she was during interviews with talk show hosts.
“Everyone kept making weird comments about my breasts, wanting to know if I had plastic surgery or not,” writes Spears, who eventually began taking the antidepressant Prozac as public criticism mounted.
In recent years, video clips of interviews conducted by Spears in her teens and early 20s have resurfaced under a critical lens due to the journalist’s sometimes harsh and invasive way of questioning.
In one clip, 17-year-old Spears was interviewed by Dutch TV journalist Ivo Niehe, who told her there was one topic they had yet to talk about, and it was a topic “everybody’s talking about.”
“Your breasts,” he says, as Spears repeats the question with a laugh. “You seem to get furious when a talk show host brings up this topic. In general, what do you think about breast implants, just in general?”

A YouTube compilation of Spears’ reactions to tough interview questions has been viewed nearly 700,000 times, and includes other similar examples, such as the time a reporter asked why she would “let everyone know you’re still a virgin,” and the time another interviewer would ask did Spears “dare” to kiss her on the cheek.
“Madonna has one tongue… Maybe a small one?” – asks the woman.
Spears from 2003 Notice the Diane Sawyer interview has also been revisited in recent years, as the pop star was grilled by a seasoned TV reporter over Timberlake’s insinuations that she cheated on him during their relationship.

Is it about shocking people?… I think everyone always thought they had a different attitude towards young girls.”
In an email interview with PEOPLE, Spears dives deeper into the most difficult moments of her life, admitting that she still has a “hard time talking about them.”
The Grammy winner writes in her book that since the end of her conservatory internship in 2021, she “had to build a completely different identity” and that she emerged as someone “strong and self-confident. Woman.”
