I was investigating and learning more about my ancestry. I experienced a small “penny-drop” moment. I grew raised in a largely white world; as people of colour, I sometimes wonder how we fit in. I didn’t feel all that rooted in my Black heritage. I thought, “OMG, this is probably why I love funk and soul music so much.” It’s critical right now.

The mixtape’s soul theme runs throughout; the songs themselves all differ and sound different. It’s not an album, so I hope people don’t just consider it that. It’s a collection of songs I’ve recorded and written over a period of several years that I want people to hear and get out of the way so I can start on the next batch.
