Brooke Shields' Daughter Asked Her to Wear a Short Dress and Cowboy Boots to Parents Weekend: 'Seriously?' (Exclusive)

Brooke Shields and her daughter Grier share a love of fashion — but they don’t always have the same sartorial vision.

While discussing her new hair care line, Commence, the 59-year-old actress tells PEOPLE that her 18-year-old self asked her to wear a surprise outfit for an upcoming event at her college. Shields also shares daughter Rowan Francis Henchy, 21, with husband Chris Henchy.

“We’re going to parents’ weekend and Grier called me and said, ‘I want you to wear cowboy boots and a little short dress,'” Shields recalls. “I said, ‘I don’t think it’s appropriate and I don’t want it’.”

The star continues, “And she’s like, ‘Mom, you’re just going to be cool.’ And then my husband said, ‘You should wear Daisy Dukes.’ I wonder, ‘What?’ I’m not trying to look back, I’m trying to go forward, but in a youthful way.”

“There should be an ease in this era of women’s life, and instead we’re met with, ‘Oh, so you’re in menopause now,’ or ‘You’ve had a good run,'” says Shields. “The moment when your kids are gone, it’s like, ‘Okay, see you later.’ What I want with this brand is lightness and excitement for this time of our lives.”
