Brooke Shields Reveals How She Chose the Title for Her Newest Memoir, Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old

Brooke Shields gets candid about aging and its consequences in her new memoir.

During An evening with Brooke Shieldshosted by Flow Space, the actress talked about her new book, Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Grow Old: Reflections on Aging as a Womanwhich was released on January 14. The memoir covers everything from Shields’ rise to CEO of hair care company Commence at age 58, to the range of women’s experiences with aging, to “this collective feeling of being overlooked,” she said.

The title came to Shields, 59, after she attended a cocktail party with her daughter, who asked her to meet some of the parents in attendance. Shields struck up a conversation with the homeowner — just a lighthearted conversation about wine, she said.

“I’ve compared myself to a bottle of Barolo from 1965 – it’s like jam at this point,” she said. “He kind of went quiet, and his tone changed. He said, ‘You really shouldn’t have told me that.’ I was like, ‘Whoa, wait a minute — this is offensive.'”

She continued: “And then it dawned on me: we leave a mark on people at certain ages – like we have a picture of them in the cupboard, and then when they get older, we’re not ready for it. We’ve aged too. And I think it’s brave to grow old. ”

Shields was first inspired to write her memoir when she launched Commence, which began as a platform for women. In conversations with women over 40, she discovered a real need for mature hair care, and the company grew from there.

It was a big moment for Shields, who suddenly became the CEO of her own company at the age of 58. Her agents suggested that she record the experience in a book. At first, Shields wasn’t sure — “why would it be so amazing that a woman in her fifties” could achieve this, she wondered — but then she used the concept as a starting point to share more of her story.

“When does a woman’s confidence peak? What actually happens to her scalp and body? It’s not all scary,” Shields said. “He’s happy when you realize you’ve come this far and want to do more.”

She added: “So the book became an exploration of talking to women over 40, looking at marketing, the beauty industry, how we’re treated and perceived by advertisers — not just in entertainment, but in everyday life. I was shocked at how little representation we have.” .”
