Brother of Kouri Richins Speaks Out, Insists She Is Innocent of Murdering Her Husband

The brother of Kouri Richins, the children’s book author accused of murdering her husband, is now speaking out about his sister’s case — and insists she is innocent.

Richins’ brother, DJ, was sitting with him Good morning America on Friday to discuss her sister’s allegations, now months after Kouri, 33, was charged with murdering her husband of nine years, Eric Richins, by lacing his cocktail with fentanyl in March 2022.

“We know Kouri is innocent and it’s all going to come out in court. And I think it’s going to shock people,” DJ said in a new hearing about Richins, 33, who is charged with one count of aggravated first-degree murder. along with additional drug charges.

“When I heard the news that Eric had died, I cried,” the DJ added. – He was a good guy.

“But that’s my sister, I knew Eric, she didn’t do it.”

During Good morning America Sitting down, DJ also called his sister a “good mom” and said he thought she and her husband were “probably in the best place they’ve ever been” at the time of his death.

Richins, who has yet to plead to murder and drug charges, shares three children with her late husband.

DJ further accused authorities of misadministering Richins’ medication at the jail, in what he called an attempt to remove her from a jail cell in Summit County, Utah, to search her. “Once is an accident. Twice is incompetence,” he asserted. “It’s six times—it seems to be on purpose.”

His claim comes after prosecutors entered a 6-page letter into evidence earlier this month, alleging that Richins “interfered with witnesses” while behind bars.

As previously reported, the letter is reportedly written to Richin’s mother and instructs the family to remind her brother, Ronney Darden, to recall a conversation he had with her now-deceased husband about the fentanyl habit.

The letter focuses on a conversation that took place while Eric and Darden were allegedly watching Sunday’s football game together, as Richins allegedly wrote that her husband told her brother “not to tell me because I would get mad because I always said he was just getting high every night and won’t help with childcare.”

The letter added that Darden could “rephrase this as needed to make a point. Just turn it all on.”

The letter was found in Richins’ cell by Officer Jeremy Thomas, who wrote in an incident report obtained by PEOPLE that she was “instructing her mother to contact the people involved in the case and what statements/testimony to give.”

And in a jailhouse call transcribed by prosecutors and obtained by PEOPLE, the accused author later claimed the letter was just part of a “fictional mystery book” she was working on. Darden told PEOPLE earlier this week that Richins is writing a new book “loosely based on what’s going on, but definitely fiction.”

“Those papers weren’t a letter to you, they were part of a fucking book,” Richins reportedly said in her jailhouse interview.

Richins has already written a children’s book about dealing with the sudden death of a parent. Her new letter allegedly violated three prison rules, according to the incident report, which said the author was confined “pending disciplinary action and a misdemeanor warrant was issued.”
