Bryan Adams Details Friendship with Amy Winehouse: ‘I Tried to Help Her’

Bryan Adams is open about his relationship with Amy Winehouse.

The “Heaven” singer, 64, detailed his friendship with the late Grammy winner during a new interview with The Sunday Times, as he revealed that he “tried to help her” amid her battle with addiction. Winehouse died at the age of 27 from accidental alcohol poisoning in July 2011.

Adams allegedly drove the singer to his Point Lookout mansion on the island of Mustique in 2007. The Sunday Times. “I met Amy when I photographed her and we became friends,” he told the newspaper. “So I invited her to spend the holidays with my family.”

“Of course I tried to help her, but, you know, it has to come from within,” Adams added. “I really don’t know what happened to Amy and it’s so sad because she was so, so talented and I really admired her individuality.”

The singer concluded: “But did I make a difference? I don’t know.”

Back in October 2007, ahead of Winehouse’s holiday visit to Adams’ residence, PEOPLE shared a first look at a photo of him with the “Back to Black” musician. At the time, he took a photo of Winehouse for the non-profit organization Hear the World, in an effort to raise awareness of hearing loss.

After her tragic death, Adams later described Winehouse as a “tremendous talent”, during an appearance on The Andrew Marr Show in 2014.

“She wrote her own songs, she had a unique voice and she was a big personality,” he said, describing the picture he made of her.

“And I think she represents the type of person that exists here in London and her music will live on forever,” he added. “She was an interesting character and she was very determined.”

Elsewhere during his conversation with The Sunday TimesAdams spoke of his close friendship with Princess Diana, whom he described as an “amazing woman”.

“We had a lot of really, really good conversations, I have to tell you. It’s actually weird and surreal to think about,” he said. “I really liked Diana a lot, she was an amazing woman and a super-big inspiration.”

“Meeting her is truly one of the greatest things that has ever happened to me,” Adams added.

Adams revealed he met the royal family on a plane after writing the song “Diana”, which is believed to be about her 1981 marriage to then-Prince Charles. Then Diana told him she “would like to hear it again”, so Adams “sent a copy to Kensington Palace, got an invitation to tea and we became friends.”

“When I went to the circle for the first time [Kensington Palace] it wasn’t, like, ‘I really need to talk to someone,’ and you don’t go into someone’s life wanting to know everything in the first 10 minutes,” he said. “It was, ‘Let’s go have a cup of tea.’ But later, the more we became friends, the more I found out what was really going on.”
