Bryce Dallas Howard Says Taylor Swift Was a ‘Great Inspiration’ for Argylle Due to Her ‘Unapologetic Dorkiness’

Bryce Dallas Howard shares his two cents on Taylor Swift-Argyll conspiracy.

The actress, who plays author Elly Conway in the new Argyll movie, denied rumors that the “Anti-Hero” singer had a hand in writing the book that inspired the movie, but admitted that Swift inspired her character.

“We can’t pretend she was involved,” Howard, 42, said on Friday’s episode The Graham Norton Show. “The reality is that she was a great inspiration in many ways.”

“She’s a cat lady. She has this great backpack with a cat in it [it] with whom he walks around. She loves a good argyle sweater, and there’s a kind of harmless silliness about her,” Howard continued of Swift, 34.

She added: “That’s kind of my character.”

Since the movie’s announcement, Swift fans have begun speculating online that the pop star may be behind the Elly Conway moniker due to a number of details related to the book and movie that fans thought could be Easter eggs.

One of the obvious clues that fans speculated about was the similarity of the picture of the cat shown in the book and the movie to one of the cats of the Grammy winner himself.

In the trailer for the film, Howard’s character has a Scottish fold cat — similar to Swift’s pet Meredith Gray — that he stuffs into an argyle-patterned backpack that he carries with him as he embarks on his own spy adventure. The cat is also featured on the poster for the film.

Swift is known as a cat lover and owns three furry cats: Meredith, Olivia Benson and Benjamin Button. Benjamin even joined her because of her TimePhotographing the person of the year 2023.

However, Argyll director Matthew Vaughn dismissed rumors of the singer’s involvement last week in an interview with Rolling stone.

He said he first learned of the plot from his daughter, who told him the book was written by the “Cruel Summer” singer – and he had to set the record straight.

“It’s a really good book,” Vaughn, 52, said Rolling stone. “There’s also Elly Conway who wrote a book, but it’s not Taylor Swift. And I say that because I imagine Taylor Swift has a bunch of people trying to jump on her bandwagon left, right and center, and I don’t want to be part of that club.”

“I read conspiracies and I was like, ‘Wow, they leave no stone unturned!’ ” added the director. “But it’s not Taylor Swift. She definitely didn’t write the book.”

The story follows Elly while she’s in the company of a real-life spy (played by Sam Rockwell) as the two race “around the world to stay one step ahead of killers as the line between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur,” according to the synopsis.

Among the stars are Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, Bryan Cranston, Samuel L. Jackson, Catherine O’Hara and John Cena.

Argyll is set to be released in theaters on February 2nd, ahead of global streaming on Apple TV+.
