The British Geological Survey (BGS) said the earthquake measured 2.5 on the Richter scale.
The epicenter of the earthquake was only 2.5 km northwest of the picturesque market, at a depth of 3 km.
It is believed that no one in the public noticed the shaking.
The strongest earthquake to hit the UK was recorded at Dogger Bank in the North Sea – 60 miles off the coast of Yorkshire.
The earthquake reached a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale and caused structural damage around the epicenter.
A BGS spokesman said: “Although they are far from the nearest plate boundary, the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, earthquakes in the UK occur because crustal stresses within the tectonic plates are relieved by movement occurring on pre-existing faults.
“Drivers of UK earthquakes unclear.”
It comes after Britons were told to stay indoors during Storm Henk and forecasters issued a life-threatening warning.
Paramedics and firefighters rushed to the road in Orpington, south London, after a woman was crushed by a tree.
The London Fire Brigade is now urging people in the capital to stay at home and only travel if necessary.
In Birmingham, a brave passer-by rescued a three-year-old child and the driver from a car submerged in floodwater.
The hero then secured the vehicle to the bridge to prevent it from being swept away by the water, local police said.
A father also rescued an unresponsive woman from the icy River Severn in Worcester after seeing her “floating like a doll”.
Colin McGarva (31) waded into the fast-moving river to save the immobile 50-year-old woman.
Families were even forced to leave their caravans at Billing Aquadrome in Northampton this afternoon thanks to the hot conditions.
