Call the Midwife reveals two beloved characters ‘abandon’ Poplar in filming update on series 13

Call the Midwife has revealed that two of its characters will leave Poplar for a trip to the Sussex coast in an episode of the upcoming 13th season.

The show shared a behind-the-scenes photo on Instagram showing Linda Bassett and Georgie Glen, who play Nurse Crane and Miss Higgins, standing on the beach with their pregnant mother.

“BREAKING: Nonnatuni brave on British coast!” the caption began.

“What do we have here?? Did Nurse Crane and Miss Higgins leave Poplar for the pleasures of the English Riviera? And who is this young mother-to-be they’re nursing…?

“Last week our team took a special trip away from the smoky streets of the Sixties East End to film in the fresh Sussex coastal air.

“The weather was… well, as you would expect from England in September – sunny, rainy, stormy, clear, cold and warm all in one day!!!! But our intrepid crew made the most of it, and everyone they had a lot of fun!”

The title also provided an update on the production status, revealing that the cast only has three more episodes to shoot.

“This sequence was for episode 5 of season 13… which means we’re moving on to the next series! Only three more episodes to shoot after this one.

“Autumn winds were blowing on the beach and the light was approaching much earlier – telling us we won’t have long to wait until our new Christmas episode!!”

The series returns to our screens in just a few months for the annual Christmas special, followed by a new season in 2024.

If previous episodes are anything to go by, series 13 should land on BBC One sometime in January.

The update comes just weeks after Olly Rix, who plays Matthew Aylward, was rumored to be out of the script and leaving the drama.

Neither Olly nor show bosses have spoken publicly about the reports. HELLO! has reached out to the actor’s representatives and the BBC for comment.

If Olly leaves the drama, he will be the second cast member to leave this year. Leonie Elliott shocked fans when she revealed she would be stepping down from her role as nurse Lucille Anderson after six years.

Taking to Instagram back in February, the actress shared her gratitude to the cast and crew, as well as fans of the show.

“Thank you all for hugging Lucille and rocking with me on this journey, it’s with a heart full of love and appreciation that I move on to pastures new,” she wrote.

“After spending 6 years on a truly wonderful show, with a fantastic team, I fell deeper and deeper in love with Lucille. I feel honored to represent the pioneering Windrush generation and their incredible impact on British society.”
