Of Holiday was released in November 2006, the film’s costumes have stood the test of time.
Sure, you might remember the Nancy Meyers movie for Graham’s charisma, Iris’s over-the-top expectations of her ex, or Amanda’s hilarious attempt at driving a British car.
However, nothing catches our eyes more than an outfit.
Created by award-winning costume designer Marlene Stewart (whose resume includes a wide variety of film Coyote the Ugly and Top Gun: Maverick and several Madonna music videos), the look is so classic that it’s the talk of the town every holiday season.
Turns out they’re actually made to be timeless.
“The whole palette is very simple. There’s not a lot of prints. It’s very subtle. It’s nice to look at in the background. And what was really important was that all the visuals were very calming,” Stewart tells PEOPLE.
In this exclusive interview, the customer shares behind the scenes stories on Holiday a wardrobe you’ll want to keep in mind when you sit down for your 50th re-examination.

Amanda embodied “quiet luxury” before it was even a thing

Stewart saw Amanda (Cameron Diaz) as a “strong, independent, creative woman” boasting plenty of confidence with a wardrobe befitting of a tasteful Hollywood movie mogul.
“The idea was to have a look that’s luxurious and fun. She’s a professional woman here. At the time, even though it was 20 years ago, [it was about]’What do women wear to work? What are the standards? How does that change?'”
Her clothes, like the custom-made hats and cashmere sweaters made for the film, also had to translate to someone who embodied wealth but never flaunted it (what might be called “quiet luxury” today).
“She’s doing quite well so she could afford some nice pieces. [The costumes adhered to] the idea to save some money and buy something that’s quality,” adds Stewart.
As well as producing one-of-a-kind pieces, Stewart has also sourced designer items – and yes, that includes the Dior coat that makes an appearance when Amanda arrives in England.
“In this particular case, we had coat racks. It was a great look because of the very simple requirements,” she says. “It was very luxurious, but at the same time, it didn’t look overdone and ridiculous. It looked very practical. She takes it off and wraps it around her waist. It’s something that’s feminine and beautiful.”

Contrary to what you might think, it took little effort for Jude Law to get into Graham’s wardrobe of sweaters and pants.
“Usually women are asked to change more often than men, and I will say he was such a sport about doing quick changes. He had a little wardrobe in a pub in Guildford, which was actually a proper, practical set,” he admits. Stewart. “Jude was really the best at going into the men’s room and changing 10 times to find the perfect look.”

At one point in the film, Amanda arrives at Graham’s cabin expecting a romantic night ahead—only for it to unexpectedly turn into a game with his two young daughters.
“You look like my Barbie,” says one of the girls when they see Amanda dressed in a sexy cocktail outfit (Roland Mouret skirt, Carlos Rosario blouse, and vintage belt to be exact).
“This was a big debate because [it was] 20 years ago Barbie the movie came out,” says Stewart. “The point is, when you have a Barbie doll, it’s something that you really admire or that speaks to you in some way. It’s accessible,” she says of how the Barbie concept aligned with Amanda’s “aspirational dressing.”

“Kate Winslet is a very serious actress and she wanted to [Iris’ clothes] absolutely mirror what someone who works for a newspaper would wear,” Stewart explains of the actress’ character.
From when we see her in London and then in Los Angeles, where she remains after she and Amanda arrange a house swap, Iris’s outfits, many of which have been mostly pastel pieces and casual wear, have remained “under the radar” and functional. .
On where she got her clothes, Stewart says: “I believe we got some items from Zara a long time ago.”
